The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has tracked 1,440 government-funded projects across Nigeria’s North-West and North-East regions, valued at over ₦271 billion, as part of its constituency and executive project tracking initiative.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, the ICPC Chairman revealed that 767 of the projects were located in the North-West, amounting to ₦112 billion, while 673 projects in the North-East accounted for a higher value of ₦158 billion.

“Our tracking exercise is yielding tangible results. We have not only monitored the implementation of these projects but also recovered significant amounts in both cash and assets,” the chairman said.

According to the Commission, ₦7.269 billion in cash was recovered from the North-West, along with $1.066 million in foreign currency. In the North-East, ₦43.335 million was retrieved. Additionally, 14 buildings, 25 plots of land, and three farmlands were seized in the North-West during the operation.

The ICPC Chairman acknowledged the role of the media in holding public officeholders accountable.

“We commend journalists who have continued to shine a light on abandoned or poorly executed intervention projects. Your vigilance ensures that public resources reach the people they are meant for,” he said.

On enforcement actions, the Commission disclosed that it investigated 171 cases during the period — 117 from the North-West and 54 from the North-East. These investigations led to 16 court cases and eight convictions.

“These figures are not just numbers; they represent our sustained efforts to curb corruption and enforce transparency in public service delivery,” the Chairman added.

The ICPC’s project tracking initiative aims to ensure that government-funded projects, particularly those in marginalized or underserved communities, are fully implemented and meet their intended objectives.
