The Ogun State Government has issued a public health alert over the rising number of diphtheria cases across the state, urging residents to take urgent preventive measures against the potentially fatal disease.
The Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, said diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection, had been declared a public health concern.
Coker stated that vaccination remained the most effective protection.

“Diphtheria is preventable. Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure that children receive all recommended routine immunizations. Adults who missed their vaccines should also get protected,” she said in a statement.
The commissioner explained that the disease spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact, and could lead to severe complications and even death if not promptly treated.
Symptoms of diphtheria, according to her, include sore throat, fever, swollen neck, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, and a thick gray or white coating in the throat or nose.
The commissioner further advised residents to practice good hygiene, avoid close contact with persons showing symptoms, and seek early medical treatment instead of self-medicating.
“Anyone who develops symptoms should report immediately to the nearest health facility. Do not self-medicate,” Coker added.
