The House of Representatives in Nigeria has commenced plans towards introduction of Security and Intelligence Studies into the curriculum of Secondary Schools in Nigeria.

The consideration is coming just as Nigeria is making efforts to contain increasing insurgency in the northeast that has claimed several lives and left several villages desolate.

At plenary on Thursday, Mr Eddie Mbadiwe drew the attention of the House to the need to start educating Nigerian children on ways to detect security threats and protect themselves and the nation from such security threats.

After deliberations, the House mandated its Committee on Education to liaise with the Universal Basic Education Commission to inject such studies in the curriculum of private and public schools as soon as possible.

Mr Mbadiwe had stressed that given the security challenges the country is dealing with presently, there was an urgent need to equip the children and the youth alongside everybody else.

Members of a terrorist group, Boko Haram, had carried out series of attacks on villages, churches and schools in the northeast and are currently holding over 200 girls abducted form a Government Girls Secondary School captive.

The group adopted the girls from the school dormitory in Chibok, Borno State on April 14, the same day a bomb blast occurred at a Motor park in Nyanya, a town in Nigeria’s capital city.

Military operations are ongoing to rescue the girls who the terrorist group said it would only release in exchange for their members held at different detention camps.

Security agencies had embarked on sensitisation programmes, giving security tips to Nigerians in a bid to make Nigerians more security conscious.
