South African sensation Tyla has won the award for Best Afrobeats at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) for her hit single Push 2 Start.
The 23-year-old star edged out a crowded field of Nigerian heavyweights, including Asake and Travis Scott (Active), Burna Boy featuring Travis Scott (TaTaTa), Rema (Baby (Is It A Crime)), Tems featuring Asake (Get It Right), Wizkid featuring Brent Faiyaz (Piece of My Heart), and Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng & Shenseea (Shake It to the Max (Fly) [Remix]).
Although she secured the top Afrobeats honour, Tyla narrowly missed out on a second win, with Push 2 Start losing in the Best Choreography category.
This is her second consecutive victory in the Best Afrobeats category, following her 2024 triumph with her hit track Water.

Other African nominees left empty-handed. Ayra Starr lost in the MTV Push Performance of the Year category, while Burna Boy missed out on Video for Good.

The night, however, belonged to global superstars. Lady Gaga emerged as the biggest winner, bagging four awards including Artist of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, and Best Collaboration for Die With a Smile with Bruno Mars. Ariana Grande also claimed three awards, including the coveted Video of the Year for Brighter Days Ahead, and took centre stage to present the Video Vanguard Award to Mariah Carey. Sabrina Carpenter picked up three Moon Person trophies, including Album of the Year for Short n’ Sweet.
There were also historic inaugural awards. American rap icon Busta Rhymes received the first-ever Rock the Bells Visionary Award, while Puerto Rican superstar Ricky Martin was honoured with the inaugural Latin Icon Award. Mariah Carey was presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, marking a night that celebrated both contemporary stars and genre-defining legends.
The 2025 VMAs were held on Sunday at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, and broadcast for the first time on the CBS network.
Tyla’s win, though celebrated by her fans, has reignited debates about her association with Afrobeats.
The singer has previously courted controversy with mixed statements about her identity as an Afrobeats artist. At the 2024 VMAs, she distanced herself from the genre, declaring her roots in Amapiano, before later claiming in a March 2025 interview that she pushes both Afrobeats and Amapiano.
Her comments angered many Nigerian fans, who argued that Afrobeats had already achieved global recognition through pioneers like Wizkid and Burna Boy. Some critics suggested Tyla was being unfairly promoted at the expense of established Nigerian artistes, while others questioned whether her music genuinely fit into the Afrobeats genre.
Despite the backlash, Tyla’s second straight VMA victory underscores the continued global rise of African music and the growing influence of the continent’s sounds on mainstream pop culture.
