Djokovic, Kerber Top Seeds At Australian OpenWorld number two, Novak Djokovic, has survived a tough three-setter to reach the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters after defeating Gilles Simon 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

The deciding set saw swaying fortunes, with Djokovic losing his serve in the fifth game before breaking in the next, and then again in the ninth to trail 5-4 on Simon’s serve.

Djokovic then showed his nerve, breaking serve twice to take the next three games to win the match after two hours, 33 minutes of play.

NPFL: Ikechukwu Ezenwa Becomes Ifeanyi Ubah FC Captain

fc1Ifeanyi Ubah football club have named Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, as their captain for the 2016/ 2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), season.

The Federation Cup winners will face Kano Pillars in the opening fixture of the 2016/2017 NPFL season at the Sani Abacha stadium on Saturday.

Ezenwa, took over from Wilson Elu, who would now act as the Deputy Skipper of the Anambra Warriors.

The experienced shot stopper linked up with the Nnewi-based side, from Sunshine Stars during the mid-season transfer window last term.

Nigeria And Egypt Confirmed For ITTF World TourThe International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), confirms participation of Nigeria and Egypt in the first major ITTF World Tour for 2017.

The Hungarian Open will serve off between January 19 and 22 in Budapest.

The largest number of participating players for any country in the tournament is from Nigeria,as the highest ranked player in the continent; Aruna Quadri leads four other Nigerian players to the championship.

2017 AFCON: CAF Gives Countries Preparation GrantsThe Confederation Of African Football (CAF), has given the 16 countries that would feature in January’s AFCON in Gabon, $237,500 each to prepare for the tournament.

The money forms part of CAF’s responsibility to ensure that participating teams at the nations cup get the needed funds to partake in the competition.

The amount released is 50 per cent of the total amount all participating teams will get from CAF.

Each participating federation is expected to receive a total amount of $475,000.

The Nigerian champions who had started off well, would not be playing in the finals of the Champions Cup currently holding in Egypt.

Al-ahly won the first quarter 15 to 13 points but kano pillars fought back to take the second quarter 21 to 19 points.

But the Egyptians took the game beyond Kano pillars as they triumphed 20 to 17 points in the third quarter and 17 to 14 points in the final quarter.

Abubakar Usman was Kano pillars star player of the match with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Nigerian team would however play Association Sportive De Sale of Morocco in the bronze medal match of the FIBA Africa Champions Cup, after both lost their semi-final matches to Egyptian and Angolan opposition.

In the championship decider, hosts Al-alhy of Egypt, would face Recreativo Do Libolo of Angola.

Governor's South-West Badminton Championship Lights Up LagosThe inaugural edition of the Governor’s South-West Badminton Championship, which kicked off on December 7, 2016, continues Thursday, at the indoor hall of the Rowe Park sport centre, Yaba, Lagos state.

The four day badminton championship which is expected to be contested by a massive eighty eight (88) players from a number of categories, is being attended by free spirited fans and badminton lovers alike set to revel in the frenzy.

It would also include the country’s top 16 ranked players and two officials each from every participating state.

Completing the cast of participating players are: four male and female players from each of the south-western states for the senior category and two players (male and female) from the U15 level, as the competition also moves to improve grass-root badminton.

The competition’s sponsors, the Lagos state government, would also provide feeding and accommodation for all the invited players including the twelve coaches and twenty five technical officials on ground for the three-day badminton fiesta.

The prize money for the maiden edition of the championship would also follow similar ground breaking trend, as it takes a bold move to foster gender equality.

The singles event for both male and female categories would have winners cash away an incredible 150,000 Naira each, for the 1st position, while the 2nd and 3rd positions would be rewarded with 100,000 and 75,000 Naira respectively.

Also, the doubles category without doubt would be as well contested as the singles category with the 1st position, going with 150,000.00, 2nd with 100,000.00 and 3rd, 25,000 x 4.

The junior U15 classification will have plenty to cheer for when the four day championship ends as they would be heading home with badminton rackets, racket bags and plenty of the games materials to aid their progress and development.
