Seoul Says Trump Sent Birthday Greetings To N. Korea’s Kim

US President Donald Trump wished North Korea’s Kim Jong Un a happy birthday, Seoul said Friday — with nuclear talks deadlocked and six years after former Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman serenaded Pyongyang’s leader.

North Korea has never officially confirmed Kim’s age or date of birth, but Rodman’s breathy Marilyn Monroe-style performance of “Happy Birthday” took place before an exhibition basketball match in Pyongyang on January 8, 2014.

In a sanctions document, the US Treasury has said Kim was born on that day in 1984, which would make him 36, but there is speculation he could be a year or two older.

Seoul’s national security adviser Chung Eui-yong met Trump in Washington on Wednesday and said the former real estate mogul — who in warmer times proclaimed he and Kim had fallen in love — “recalled” it was his birthday.

“President Trump wished Chairman Kim Jong Un a happy birthday and asked President Moon to convey it to him,” Chung told reporters as he arrived back in South Korea on Friday.

The message was delivered “in an appropriate manner”, he added, without explaining how it had been transmitted.

Contacts between the two Koreas are at a standstill, with Pyongyang’s official media repeatedly excoriating the leadership in Seoul.

At a meeting of his ruling party in December, Kim declared an end to Pyongyang’s moratoriums on nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests and threatened a demonstration of a “new strategic weapon” soon.

Trump and Kim have had three meetings since June 2018 but there has been little tangible progress in denuclearising North Korea.

At the 2014 event, Rodman, a heavily tattooed former NBA All-Star, sang the birthday song before the North Korean leader and his wife Ri Sol Ju, as the crowd clapped along.

It was Rodman’s fourth visit to North Korea and he appeared to bow to Kim.

Don’t Use My Name To Canvass For Support In 2023 – Buhari

He also assured Nigerians that he will ensure that the 2023 elections are free, fair and credible.

“What I want to promise Nigerians that I will work very hard on, is free and fair elections.

“All those that are going to succeed the National Assembly and Presidency, have to work very hard because I will make sure, using the law enforcement agencies that elections are free and fair and nobody uses his office or resources to force himself on his constituencies,” he said.

Kylian Mbappe got a glowing “happy birthday” wish from Pele on Thursday, further feeding football fans’ comparisons of the 20-year-old with the Brazilian legend.

“Only special talents show themselves so early. Happy birthday, Kylian. At just 20, I am excited by what is still to come,” Pele tweeted in English and Portuguese.

The French forward scored four goals in this year’s World Cup, including one in the final that saw France beat Croatia 4-2 to clinch the trophy.

That made him just the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pele, who did so in 1958.

Pele, 78, has several times used his Twitter account to express his admiration for Paris Saint-Germain’s Mbappe.

After the World Cup triumph, Pele tweeted: “If Kylian keeps equalling my records like this I may have to dust my boots off again.”

Mbappe responded: “The king will always remain king.”

Early this month, Pele gave an interview to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper in which he highlighted the similarities between his younger self and the French player.

“We are alike and we are more or less the same age,” joked the Brazilian who won his first World Cup at just 17.

Atiku Calls For Reflection Ahead Of Birthday Celebration

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called for reflection ahead of his November 25 birthday anniversary.

In a statement made available to journalists by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku said a time like this required a sharp focus on rescuing Nigeria from the economic crisis and global ignominy.

The former Vice President, therefore, enjoined his family, friends, and associates to withhold from placing adverts to congratulate him.

Although he thanked them for their good intentions, he advised them to channel their funds for adverts and congratulatory messages in the media, into charity organisations of their choice, such as orphanages.

He said, “These times call for sober reflection and prayer, rather than merriment and jollification. These times require a laser-sharp focus on rescuing Nigeria from the economic crisis and global ignominy.

“These times must be dedicated solely to the task of getting Nigeria working again, on JOBS (Jobs, Opportunities, Being United and Security). The time for celebration will definitely come. But, first of all, the battle for the soul of our nation must be won.”

The PDP flagbearer also thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support in his quest to lead the country.

He appealed to the citizens to keep him constantly in their prayers on his birthday and afterwards adding that “the battle truly belongs to the Almighty God.”
