Governor Oshiomhole made the declaration on Saturday at the grand reception organised by members of the Nigerian Labour Congress to celebrate his achievement in government.

He also announced the commencement of automated pensions system that would eliminate delays in the pension scheme.

For almost eight years, Governor Oshiomhole, a former labour leader, has run the affairs of Edo State.

He had gathered in a hall leaders of the labour union across the state who have decided to organise a grand reception in his honour.

The labour leaders in their speeches said Governor Oshiomhole had defended the integrity of the union through his development oriented programmes.

At the meeting was the All Progressives Congress’ governorship candidate and he promised to improve on the things the party had done, including payment of salaries, training and use of technology to effect promotions and pensions’ payments.

Buhari’s Appointments Are Based On Merit – Oshiomhole

Adams-OshiomholeThe Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the recent appointments of his Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Comptroller General of Customs and Presidential Liaison Officers to the National Assembly.

According to the Edo State Governor, “the appointments were based on merit and not political sentiments or ethnic consideration, as some tribal jingoists would have us believe”.

Sanitise The System

The Governor, in a statement by his spokesman, Peter Okhiria, said that Nigeria as a nation had come to a point where the best hands needed to confront the peculiarity of the problems.

“It is not all the time we descend to the level of geopolitical balancing; we need to employ unusual methods to solve an unusual problem.

“The level of decay in the country at present requires very seasoned hands and incorruptible Nigerians that would help to translate the APC agenda of change for the benefit of all Nigerians. We must not reduce governance to political patronage of bread and butter,” Governor Oshiomhole stressed.

The Governor also congratulated the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Comptroller General of Customs, all of whom he had very close relationship with and whose credentials he said stood tall among their compeers.

Governor Oshiomhole wished them well in their new jobs of helping to sanitise the system.

He also suggested that rather than condemning the President for taking bold steps, he should be commended for having the uncommon courage to take plausible decisions in the appointments he has made so far, as he settles down for the real task of governance.

He said: “If we must make a huge difference in the lives of Nigerians, things must be done differently. We cannot continue to apply same template in the recruitment of persons and expect different results”.

The appointed officials have been sworn in on Monday by President Buhari.

NASS Crisis Would Soon Be Forgotten – Oshiomhole

Adams-OshiomholeThe Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, says the ongoing crisis in Nigeria’s National Assembly over the choice of principal officers will soon be a thing of the past.

Addressing reporters after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, alongside Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, Oshiomhole said the meeting they had with the warring Senators on Sunday evening was useful.

“I feel the position now is ‘look how do you ensure that having elected this two (Senate President and his Deputy), that the remaining position that are within the discretion of the APC caucus in the Senate are distributed in a way as to give the other group that were shut out of the process a sense of belonging?

“We are convinced that a winner-takes-all in this case won’t work and building peace is making concession and power works better when it acknowledges that even the person who is powerless has a right to exist,” the Edo State Governor said.

Oshiomhole told reporters that he had met with President Buhari to brief him on how their meeting with the Senators went.

“My brother (Bagudu) and I spent some time with the senators last night (Sunday) and we had what I think was a useful conversation. We have come today to report to the President what transpired at the meeting and make few suggestions to him and I think for me there is light, as they say, at the end of the tunnel.

“One thing is clear, we are all APC family, we are all committed to change. We recognise that there are few issues; people may not be comfortable, but we have what it takes to resolve the issues so that in the National Assembly we will have an APC Senate caucus that is united, that is ready to support the change agenda as the President is committed to and work along with PDP.

“Nobody is suggesting that we shouldn’t work with PDP. PDP exists in the House, just as APC had existed in the House under PDP government. So, at some point there has to be a way to engage bipartisan. So, that is basically why we are here,” Governor Oshiomhole stated.

The National Assembly has been embroiled in crisis following the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Senator Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party as Deputy Senate President.

The party had nominated Governor Oshiomhole and his Kebbi State counterpart, to mediate between the warring Senators.

Workers’ Salaries: Oshiomhole Asks LG Chairmen To Pay From Allowances

oshiomholeEdo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has directed Local Government Council chairmen who are owing their workers to pay them from their security votes and their overhead allowances.

Governor Oshiomhole, who gave the directive while meeting with union leaders and some LG Chairmen at the Government House in Benin City, said that he had to take the same steps to meet up with his wage bill at the state level.

”I deeply regret that some local government councils have defaulted in the payment of salaries. The good news is that some local governments are up-to-date in payments to their staff

”We have resolved to block all leakages and free money to pay the local government workers. I fully appreciate the pains of our comrades in our local governments.

”Since I assumed duty here in 2008, I have done everything possible to ensure that the local governments operate fully without interference.”

The Governor reiterated that the LG councils in the state are autonomous to the extent that he does not interfere with their finances but only interferes as he is doing now, to ensure payment of workers’ salaries.

”If you are not able to pay salaries of workers, then you don’t pay yourselves salaries. You cannot be eating when workers are starving. Let both the leader and the workers starve together so they can feel the pain of the workers,” he said.

”I will give you all the support you need so that we can free resources for local governments to meet the obligations of their employees,” Oshiomhole added.

NLC-OshiomoleFormer President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has congratulated Comrade Ayuba Wabba, on his victory as the new President of the NLC in the just concluded 11th National Delegates Conference of the Congress.

The former NLC President said in a congratulatory letter addressed to the new NLC President that the Nigerian Labour Movement had lost a significant amount of prestige and influence in the sight of the Nigerian working people and the Nigerian public at large.

However, Comrade Oshiomhole urged Comrade Ayuba to provide a focused and dynamic leadership for the labour movement.

“There is no appropriate moment than now to also work assiduously to re-position the Congress and brace up to the challenge of revolution of expectations of the affiliates of the Congress and Nigerians as a whole, while also providing a focused and dynamic leadership that will chart a new course for the Nigerian labour movement as vanguard in the struggle for good governance, democratic consolidation and social justice,” he said.

Calling the attention of Comrade Ayuba to the challenges faced by the labour movement, Oshiomhole said “There is also the challenge of re-uniting and rebuilding confidence amongst all the affiliates of the Congress in the spirit of unity and solidarity that the Nigerian Labour Movement shares.

“In the same vein, there is also the important task of deepening the strategic connection between the Congress and the Nigerian civil society.”

The Edo State Governor further emphasised that as Comrade President, Ayuba should see his victory as a collective and not personal one, adding that his tenure to lead the NLC is coinciding with one of the most critical periods in Nigeria’s history, politically and economically.

He, therefore, wished the new NLC President a successful tenure, assuring him of his continued solidarity, cooperation and support at all times.

Oshiomhole also appealed to those who felt aggrieved by the outcome of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) assembly, to resist the temptation of convening a factional congress.

“Let me seize this opportunity to appeal to my Comrades, in particular, Comrades Joe Ajaero, Issa Aremu and Igwe Achese to resist the temptation of convening a factional congress either on Friday or at any other date.

“Having fought the good fight, there is honour in conceding to defeat even in the face of imperfections,” he said.

However, he enjoined them all to submit to the demands of democratic principles, by extending the hands of fellowship to the new leadership in order to get on with the task of re-positioning the Nigerian Labour Congress.

Governor Oshiomhole made the appeal at the groundbreaking ceremony of a twin building that would serve as the labour house of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress.

He said that despite the economic crunch the state government had kept its own part of the bargain with workers.

The Edo State Governor, however, said he was facing a tough time fighting off people who are trying to harness government properties for personal use.

Nigerian security agencies have tightened its surveillance of  oil pipelines and rigs in the Niger delta region where oil theft is high.

In an effort to strengthen the naval capacity of Nigeria, the US handed over a Naval ship to the Nigerian Navy,  which it said was in the joint interest of both countries, as it would improve security in the gulf of Guinea which is important for Nigeria, neighbouring African States and the rest of the world which ships come from the sea lanes.

In an interview with Channels Television last week, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle said: “the OKPABANA ship that we have just delivered to Nigeria should make it more difficult for people stealing oil to get it out to ship. It is a part of the package of strengthening maritime security, with amongst other things can strengthener the fight against oil bunkery.

“The OKPABANA has been in the works for several years. We didn’t just rush it out here. It is a deliberate decision several years ago because of the strength of our relationship”.

Edo Collaborates With NNPC On Supply of Kerosine

Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole

The Edo state government is collaborating with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to ensure that kerosine is sold to residents  at the controlled price of N50 per litre.

This was made known by the Chairman of Edo State Task Force on Petroleum and Gas Monitoring, Chris Okaegben, during a visit to points of sale to enforce the sale at the government approved price.

He blamed the shortage of the commodity on those hoarding the product and sell them at exorbitant prices later.

The collaboration, according to Okaegben, is to ensure an increase in the supply of kerosene to the state. He further promised that the product will reach the end users.

A mild drama ensued when kerosene dealers brought jerry cans to make whole sale purchase, Okaegben embarked on the destruction of jerry cans and urged the end users to come forward and purchase the product at the price approved by the government.

Some of the beneficiaries thanked the State Government and the NNPC for the initiative, some of whom said they have never had the opportunity to buy kerosene owing to long queues of jerry cans.

It is however hoped that that the policy will be sustained in the long run.

NMA Warning Strike Is Illegal, Ill-Advised – Oshiomhole

As the strike by the Nigerian Medical Association enters its second day, Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has described it as illegal, ill advised, and blackmail on the leadership of the country.

Governor Oshiomhole, who was also a labour leader, said that the decision by the NMA that all its affiliate bodies join the strike negates all known labour law.

Governor Oshiomhole said this on Thursday when he met with leaders of the state medical practitioners union in the Edo State Government House, Benin.

He further stated that if the state practitioners joined the strike on the basis of solidarity, then their counterparts in private establishments should as well join the strike, adding that it is a calculated attempt to enrich private hospitals at the detriment of patients who may not be able to afford them.

He said that the state may be forced to enforce the ‘no work no pay’ policy if they do not rethink their decision in the light of the irreparable loss the strike would bring.

Governor Oshiomhole also added that whatever the specifics are, it bothers on abuse of vantage power to hold the Federal Government to ransom in the manner that the NMA has done, and by the national law under essential services, the strike is illegal.

The Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors who led the delegation said that the facts presented by the governor will be discussed in their next general meeting.
