Leah Sharibu’s Father Reacts To Reports That She Has Given Birth

The father of abducted Dapchi Schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, has reacted to the news making the rounds that his daughter has given birth to a baby and has been married off to a commander of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

In a phone conversation with Channels Television’s correspondent on Sunday, Mr Nathan Sharibu said he would rather not make any comment on the issue.

He added that his primary concern is to see his daughter return alive and will, therefore, not give any credence to any rumours.

News that she had given birth, as well as her alleged marriage to a Boko Haram commander, started making the rounds after Journalist, Ahmad Sakilda, who is believed to have access to the insurgents announced in a tweet that the abducted schoolgirl is now a mother.

‘We Have Known No Peace’, Leah Sharibu’s Mother, Others Call For Her Release

The tweet read: “Why, I wonder, do we pretend that leaving Leah behind won’t result in pregnancy? Since the terror group announced condemning her to slavery, is there any step or collective focus on preventing similar occurrences? She’s a mother, but I don’t know about the gender of the baby,”.

Leah had been abducted from her school – Science Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19, 2018, along with over 100 other schoolgirls.

Although the others were later released, she was held back on the grounds of refusing to denounce her religion – Christianity.

The Christian Association of Nigeria and several other human rights groups from across the world have continued to campaign for her release.

Nigerians React As Leah Sharibu Marks Second Birthday In Boko Haram Captivity

More than a year after Leah Sharibu was abducted along with over 100 of her mates from the Government Girls Secondary School in Dapchi, Adamawa State, hopes are still alive that she will someday be reunited with her family.

While the other schoolgirls had regained their freedom from the insurgents, Leah, a Christian, was the only one who was not released for refusing to denounce her faith.

Today marked her second birthday in captivity since her abduction on February 19, 2018 and a group of concerned Nigerians staged a march in her honour.

Some took to the social media to wish her Happy Birthday, while expressing sympathy over her plight.

Some others also expressed their frustration over her prolonged detention and urged the government to make more efforts to secure her release.

The Yobe state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has asked the Federal Government to do all it can to secure the release of the remaining Dapchi Schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, who is still in captivity with Boko Haram terrorists.

Briefing newsmen on Friday in Damaturu the Yobe state capital, the state CAN Secretary, Mr Bright Ogbansiegbe said the association was dismayed by the fact that Leah was held back on the ground that she must denounce her Christian faith for Islam.

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to rescue the remaining Dapchi schoolgirl Leah Sharibu, who is still in captivity with Boko Haram terrorists.

The President said this less than 24 hours after over 100 of the girls who were abducted from their school on February 19, 2018, were rescued.

In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu on Thursday, he said his administration will not relent in its efforts to bring Leah Sharibu safely back home to her parents as it has done for the other girls after she was held back by the terrorists over her decision, as reported, not to convert from Christianity to Islam.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is as committed to the freedom of the only Dapchi schoolgirl still in captivity as he was to the girls’ freedom when all 110 were in the captivity of Boko Haram terrorists.

“The Buhari administration will not relent in efforts to bring Leah Sharibu safely back home to her parents as it has done for the other girls after she was held back by the terrorists over her decision, as reported, not to convert from Christianity to Islam.

“President Buhari is fully conscious of his duty under the constitution to protect all Nigerians, irrespective of faith, ethnic background or geopolitical location and will not shirk in this responsibility.

“The President is equally mindful of the fact that true followers of Islam all over the world respect the injunction that there is no compulsion in religion,” the statement read.

The President, therefore, appealed to other parents who have to watch others rejoice while their own daughter is still missing, saying his administration will continue to do all they can to ensure their release.
