Former West Ham Defender Jailed After Car Sale Scam

Former Czech Republic international Tomas Repka was jailed for 15-months on Thursday on charges of selling a leased Mercedes for 46,500 euros ($52,700).

Repka played three years at Fiorentina in Italy and five at West Ham United in London as well as turning out 46 times for his country.

He was sentenced to a six-month suspended prison term last year after posting an advert offering escort services featuring a photo of his ex-wife and her telephone number.

The former defender was also arrested for drunk driving twice and was sentenced to community service last year for failing to pay alimony.

Selling the Mercedes, which he had been using on a rental basis, was the last straw.

“Unfortunately we have no choice now but to inflict a prison sentence,” said judge Alice Havlikova, rejecting a heavier sentence proposed by the prosecution.

He is appealing the sentence, his lawyer said.

Repka picked up 20 red cards in his career and was left out of the Czech squad that made the final of Euro 96 after a two-match international ban.

Newcastle Sign Swiss World Cup Defender Fabian Schaer

Fabian Schaer

Newcastle United announced on Thursday the signing of Switzerland defender Fabian Schaer from Deportivo La Coruna.

Schaer played in three of Switzerland’s four games at the World Cup in Russia, helping the Swiss to progress from Group E – along with Brazil – before missing their last-16 defeat by Sweden through suspension.

He made 25 appearances for Deportivo in La Liga last season, having moved to the Spanish outfit from 1899 Hoffenheim a year ago.

The defender, 26, is the Magpies’ fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Slovakia’s Martin Dubravka and South Korea’s Ki Sung-yueng and the loan capture of Brazilian Kenedy.

“I’m really happy to be here,” said Schaer. “The club is a really big club for me. It has a big name and it is a brilliant chance for me.

“I’m not like a typical defender. I, of course, defend but I’m quite good with the ball.

“I like to play, I want to build up the game from behind and I think that is a strength of mine. I have also scored some headers. That could also be a strength and hopefully I can use it here.”

Manager Rafa Benitez said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Fabian to Newcastle United. He is an international, did well in the World Cup and has great experience. He adds competition in this position and that is a positive for the team.”

“I am very happy to be here, because Roma is a great club that is moving in the right direction, following a clear sporting project,” Marcano said.

“I also believe the footballing philosophy of the team will fit well with my strengths and characteristics.”

The former Spanish Under-21 international made more than 150 appearances for Porto, having previously played for Villarreal, Rubin Kazan, Racing Santander and Olympiakos, with whom he won the Greek title twice.

“I wish him all the luck in the world with this new adventure.”

Marcano becomes Roma’s second signing for next season after 21-year-old Croatian midfielder Ante Coric last Monday.

Roma finished third in Serie A this season securing Champions League football, having reached the semi-finals this season.

EPL: Mourinho, Klopp Satisfied With Draw

Liverpool, Manchester United, man United, Jurgen Klopp, Jose MourinhoManchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, wants his players to stop spurning chances after they needed an 84th-minute equalizer from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to rescue a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Only seven of United’s 32 Premier League goals this season have been scored in the first 35 minutes and Mourinho wants his team to stop letting their opponents off the hook.

United, who had won their previous nine matches in all competitions, remain sixth, four points off the top four.

On the flipside, Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp believes his team dominated play and deserved more from the game.

A James Milner penalty handed the visitors the lead in the 27th minute after Paul Pogba handled the ball in the box.

After the game, Klopp was quick to praise the performance of his Liverpool side but admitted that while a draw was satisfactory, the performance merited more.

Arsenal Are More Of A Unit Now – Monreal

ArsenalDefender, Nacho Monreal believes Arsenal are in a better position to challenge for the Premier League title than in 2013/14 because the team are playing “like a unit”.

Arsène Wenger’s side have started this season encouragingly. They are level on points with leaders Manchester City after 12 matches and possess the joint second best defensive record in the league.

Monreal says “everything is right” at the moment, but feels his team-mates must learn from two seasons ago, when they led the Premier League on New Year’s Day but finished seven points behind the eventual champions.

“We need to learn from that,” he told Arsenal Player. “I remember it very well because we finished the first half of the season (near the top).

“In the second half, we lost a lot of games so we need to learn about that.

“I think the team is different now. We have different players, and are more competitive.

“I think the level of the team is better now and I hope we can do something special this season. At the moment, everything is right so we need to carry on.

“The secret? I will say that we are playing more compact, like a unit.

“The players are playing with more solidarity, all players try to defend. I think this is the (reason for) that.

“We have won the Community Shield, we are second in the Premier League with the same points as Manchester City.”

Arsenal Must Be Ready For Angry Bayern – Mertesacker

ArsenalDefender, Per Mertesacker says Arsenal must be ready for an “angry” Bayern Munich intent on revenge when they meet on Wednesday night.

The Gunners breathed life into their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory against the Bundesliga champions in October.

Mertesacker expects a strong response from Bayern at the Allianz Arena, and says Arsène Wenger’s side must be at the top of their game.

“They had a Friday night match (against Eintracht Frankfurt) so they are well prepared for midweek – they are clever, the Germans!” the Arsenal vice-captain said.

“We showed that we can beat them, that is a good sign but it will be a different game at their place. They are outstanding in their league, it will be a good game and both teams have a good chance to go through to the knockout stage.

“They will be angry I guess. We are the first team who really challenged them, so they will be on the ball and try to show that they are back and better than us.

“We need to get something out of this game, there is still a bit of pressure and urgency to perform. We need to perform and defend even better.”

Arsenal Call Oboabona Up For Trial

Arsenal have reportedly handed Nigerian international defender Godfrey Oboabona of Sunshine Stars, a trial

Oboabona was part of the Super Eagles squad that emerged African Champions at the concluded Afcon 2013 in South Africa.

The 22-year-old who currently plays for Sunshine Stars has opened up, saying Arsenal happens to be his favourite club since he was a boy and it is his dream to play for the Gunners.

“Though, I have offers from the top five leagues in the world, Arsenal happens to be my favourite club and it has been since childhood,”Oboabona.

Valued at £1m by his club, Oboabona, has 18 caps for Nigeria and Wenger is likely sign him up at the end of the season as Arsenal have been going through defensive mess since the season, hence Wenger’s reported impatient for the player to join the Gunners.

Keshi Unsure Of Yobo, Moses Over Ethiopia Clash

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has said he is doubtful of defender Joseph Yobo’s return and that of Victor Moses for the final group clash against Ethiopia which is a must-win for the Super Eagles.

Victor Moses who was side-lined against Burkina Faso in Nigeria’s opener which ended in a draw due to injury, was later fielded in the second game against Zambia which also ended in a draw and has also been declared not fully fit. Yobo was side-lined in the second game due to ankle injury in the first game. The defender has also been declared not fully fit but are both in training with the squad.

According to Super Eagles Group C standing, the Super Eagles must record a significant win with more goals against Ethiopia in the final group match on Tuesday if they want to scale through the group clashes into the quarterfinals.

Keshi said this while speaking to journalists even though he has not made his final decision on the two players.

But on hand for Yobo’s replacement is reserve defender Azubuike Egwuekwe, who has recovered from illness.

With second batches of games done with in group C, Burkina Faso are the group leaders with 4 points after thrashing Ethiopia 4-0, while Zambia who are on the second spot played a 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles with 2 points and Nigeria on the third spot with 2 points also and lastly Ethiopia with 1 point.

UCL: Shakhtar topples Chelsea in group E with 2-1 win

Ahead of the clash with another English club with Manchester United in the English Premier League, Chelsea got a wake-up call last night in the UEFA champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk as the European champion suffered their first defeat of the season.

With the return of John Terry to the squad, the ought was that it would be a win-win situation for Chelsea in the away game but reverse was the case as the London club fell 2-1 as the player got off to the worst possible start as he unwittingly set up Shakhtar’s opener inside three minutes. this is Terry’s first appearance since accepting his racism ban.

But he was arguably the least culpable Chelsea player on a night which cost the Barclays Premier League leaders dearly and a risible performance from Fernando Torres scuppered their hopes of a comeback.

Shakhtar Donetsk will be grateful to the duo of Alex texeira and Fernandinho as their goals ensured victory for Shakhtar last night but Chelsea responded late as they couldn’t wake-up from their slumber in good time and were only able to secure a consolation goal thanks to Oscar.

Now on the Group E table, Shakhtar are leaders in the first of what could be a crucial double-header.

Chelsea were spared dropping out of the qualification places by Juventus’ shock draw at Nordsjaelland, but they will need to do much better at Stamford Bridge in two weeks to avoid doing so.

The defeat was their first since their UEFA Super Cup thrashing by Atletico Madrid and the performance was almost as alarming at times as they were carved open by an outstanding Shakhtar side.

The build-up to the game was predictably dominated by Terry’s return, the timing of which was quite extraordinary.

In what was a fiercely-contested game in a fizzing atmosphere, Oscar tried to respond with a tame low drive before Willian almost lived up to his manager’s promise to make Chelsea pay for not signing him by drilling wide.

That was in the 15th minute and it got worse for the visitors when Frank Lampard went down injured, forcing an early end to his record 100th Euro appearance for the club and the introduction of Eden Hazard.

John Terry could not stop Willian brilliantly setting up Henrik Mkhitaryan, Cole doing enough to force Shakhtar’s goal machine to shoot too close to Cech.

That sparked a flurry of chaotic corners, which Chelsea defended frantically and saw Cech produce a wonder-save to deny Tomas Hubschman from point-blank range after Oscar set up the midfielder.

Torres’ weak hooked volley from Branislav Ivanovic’s cross summed up a half in which he proved a real liability, a theme that continued after the restart.

Hazard produced a horrendous gaffe to gift Shakhtar their second goal in the 52nd minute.

He was pickpocketed in the centre-circle by Fernandinho, who fed Adriano and both raced goal wards for the former to slot past Cech.

Ashley Cole set to honour England despite calls for ban

Chelsea Full back and England player Ashley Cole has been told to report for National duty for his home country even after calls from different quarters foe the defender to be banned from international activity on pitch for England, nothnaks to his recent attack on the Football Association.

Cole called the FA a “bunch of t***s” on Twitter after he was accused of “evolving” his statement supporting Terry’s defence against the charge he racially abused Anton Ferdinand.

Despite former England player; Alan Shearer’s call and that of pundits alike for Ashley Cole to be banned form international football, the Chelsea full-back is in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino.

He is facing disciplinary action from Chelsea and the FA after he reacted furiously on Twitter to doubts being expressed about his evidence in the John Terry racial abuse case.

Shearer said on BBC that he thinks the FA can put a big statement out there by not fining Ashley Cole but actually banning him on Friday against San Marino.

Cole responded by retweeting a comment on Twitter which referenced an incident in the game between Newcastle and Leicester in 1998 when the former Magpies forward’s boot made contact with Neil Lennon’s face.

The FA ruled the striker had been making a “genuine attempt to free himself” from a tangle with his opponent and took no disciplinary action against him.

Cole retweeted a post from @CollinR4 which read: “Alan Shearer says @TheRealAC3 needs to be banned for comments. I want his opinion on bans for kicking Neil Lennon in the head. #GlassHouses”

Cole has spoken to Hodgson and will meet up with the squad at the new national football centre, St George’s Park near Burton-upon-Trent, today.

It is understood that if he is left out of the San Marino match it will be a case of Hodgson resting players against the Group H minnows rather than any statement relating to the controversy that erupted on Friday. Cole, 31, has 98 England caps to his name and will be desperate to reach the 100-mark.

He will also be part of the England squad that assemble at St George’s Park for the official opening tomorrow by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate.

Podolski can be kept quiet – Marko Marin

One of new Chelsea signings for the 2012/2013 season Marko Marin boasted that Chelsea will have no problem keeping his German rival Lukas Podolski under control as both clubs will be meeting for a London Derby.

Podolski who has been in a tremendous form will be a huge threat to the Blues’ hopes of winning Saturday’s London derby against Arsenal.

After a slow start, Podolski has bagged three goals in his last four Gunners games.

Attacking midfielder Marin, 23, said: “At the beginning it was a bit new for him, but now he is doing very well.“He has scored a few goals and he is playing well.

“Will Lukas be a threat? I think we have a very good defence. Our right-back Branislav Ivanovic will do very well.“It will be very hard for Lukas to play against him. I am not sure that Arsenal has played against a good team like us.

“I am confident that we can keep Podolski quiet.“There are two German players that we will be playing against, with Per Mertesacker also playing for Arsenal.

“I have not spoken to Lukas. We know each other from the national team, of course, but we are not really friends. “I hope I’m in the team, but the important thing is that we win and keep our position in the Premier League.”

Marin finally made his Blues debut in the 6-0 Capital One Cup rout of Wolves after missing the start of the season with a hamstring injury. He said: “I did it in a training session, but I feel good now and I can forget all that and look to the future.

“I just want to play for as long as possible, for as many games as I can. I am nearly 100 per cent fit again, so I hope to play.” Meanwhile, full-back Ryan Bertrand aims to build on his success after scoring in Tuesday night’s romp.

The 23-year-old has played a part in all but two games this season and forced his way into the England reckoning.

He said: “The year just keeps getting better for me so as long as I can keep it going, I should be able to do good things.

“We want to keep it going and hopefully repeat the success we had last year.”

Taye Taiwo prepares for UCL clash against PSG

Nigeria’s rocky defender plying his trade for Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiev; Taye Taiwo is in top form ahead of  his clubs UEFA champions league clash with French side Paris-Saint Germain on Tuesday evening as he expressed his believe that both clubs will leave nothing out to clinch victory as an assurance to move to the next level of the money-spinning tournament.

Bought by AC Milan but played only four matches in Serie A and four in the Champions League before joining English Premier League side Queens Park Rangers on loan, the defender switched to Dynamo Kiev, making his debut in the Ukraine league on 3 August in the match with Krivyi Rig which Dynamo won 1-0.

He said opening matches of such tournament are always very crucial as it determines how far clubs can go in the competitions so all hands has to be on deck to get favourable results but for him lacing his boot against PSG will be very interesting.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian international was loyal to the French club Marseille seven whole season, the arch rival of PSG, as his career also went all time-high winning the 2010 league title and the French League Cup twice, in 2010 and 2011, scoring 25 goals in 271 matches.
