Reps Ask FG To Declare State Of Emergency On Kidnapping

House of Representatives, Reps, KidnappingThe House of Representatives says concrete action must be taken to check the spate of kidnapping in Nigeria.

The lawmakers made the call for a state of emergency to be declared on kidnapping on Wednesday after a debate on a motion of urgent national importance on the need to declare a state of emergency on kidnapping across the country.

The motion was raised by a member of the House from Ondo State, Representative Babatunde kolawole and supported by some of his colleagues including; Ado Dogowa, Emmanuel Orker-Jev and Adam Jagaba.

After deliberations on the issue on the floor of the House in Abuja, lawmakers unanimously agreed that the crime had taken an alarming dimension with the kidnapping of school children.

The House called for a security summit that would fashion an effective response to the kidnapping phenomenon.

They said some committees of the House, telecom service providers and all security agencies would take part in the summit.

The lawmakers are making the move after four students, the principal and his vice were kidnapped at the Lagos State Model College in Igbo Nla in Epe area of the state.

They were kidnapped while on the assembly ground on Thursday, October 6.

The kidnappers had demanded 100 million Naira ransom for the victims to regain freedom before the six kidnapped victims were released on Tuesday, October 11.

Some states in Nigeria had established laws that prescribes capital punishment for persons found guilty for kidnapping.

Lagos School Kidnap Victims Regain Freedom

School KidnapInformation reaching us has it that the six kidnapped victims from the Lagos State Model College, Igbo – Nla in Epe Area of Lagos have been released by their abductors.

The victims are four students, the school principal and his vice kidnapped while on the assembly ground on Thursday, October 6.

The men, alleged to be heavily armed, were said to have invaded the college and whisked away the victims. Two of the kidnapped persons were swiftly rescued by the Police operatives.

The kidnappers later reportedly demanded 100 million Naira ransom for the other victims to regain freedom. It is not clear if any ransom was paid for their release.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni had promised that the Police would rescue others as more operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) were deployed to ensure this.

School Kidnap: Abductors Of Students, Officials In Lagos Make Demands

Gunmen Abduct , Lagos, Epe, Model College, Gunmen,The abductors of vice principals, a teacher and pupils of Lagos State Model College in Igbo Nla in Epe area of Lagos have demanded 100 million Naira ransom for the victims to regain freedom.

A source told Channels Television on Friday that the gunmen alleged to be from the south-south region headed towards Ogbere River to link up the Ogun River.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said that efforts were on to rescue others as more operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and the decoy marine team in search of the victims.

The men, alleged to be heavily armed, were said to have invaded the college whisking away the victims.

Two of the eight people kidnapped from school were rescued on Thursday by the Police operatives.

Meanwhile, nine suspects have been arrested over last week’s abduction of the wife of the Central Bank Governor, Margaret Emefiele along Benin-Agbor road.

The suspects who were arrested with millions of Naira by officers of the intelligence response team in Edo, Delta and Benue states are one each from Delta and Benue states and six Fulanis.

One more suspect has also been arrested in the kidnap of some landlords in Isheri, a border community between Lagos and Ogun state.

The latest arrest brings to five the number of suspects in police custody.

Prompt Rescue

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule on Thursday visited the Igbo Nla Senior and Junior Model College and gave the assurance that government would work assiduously to ensure prompt rescue of the victims.

Adebule, who was accompanied by top government officials and head of security agencies to the school, condemned the act, but pleaded with parents and families of the victims to cooperate with government and security agencies in ensuring prompt rescue of the victims.

In a series of tweets, the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, has also pleaded with parents and families of the victims to cooperate with government and security agencies in ensuring prompt rescue of the victims

He added that “all security agencies have been fully mobilized to ensure the prompt rescue of the kidnap victims”.

National Importance

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has also asked security agencies to intensify rescue efforts for the victims.

The resolution by the House followed a motion by a Lagos lawmaker, Honourable Wale Raji, under matters of urgent national importance.

Mr Raji told the House how the incident happened while students were observing early morning prayers.

He said that he heard about the development shortly after the House resumed plenary and he was compelled to bring it to the attention of the House and, by extension, the country.

Incidents of attacks by militants have been on the increase in riverine communities in Lagos state.

Assailants Kill Taxi Operator And Family In Ikorodu

Ikorodu, Taxi Operator, Taxi parkTragedy struck on Thursday in Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, Lagos as some suspected armed men allegedly killed the chairman of Muritala Mohammed International Airport taxi park, Mr Kennedy Uzor and other members of his family.

The incident, which occurred at Adegbose Estate Phase 2, threw the residents into confusion on what could have caused their death in such manner.

Some of the residents alleged that the assailants scaled the fence of the victims’ resident and forced their way into their room.

While the body of the deceased persons have been deposited in a mortuary in Ikorodu, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Fatai Owoseni, has condemned the alleged murder.

Picking Bits And Pieces

He gave Channels Television a hint of the efforts that are ongoing to find the killers.

“Attackers had gone into the house and killed the head of the family and from preliminary investigations, there were signs of some struggles.

“We found out that same assassins also killed two of the kids,” he said.

Mr Owoseni said investigation has begun and that those behind the gruesome murder would be brought to justice.

“We are just picking bits and pieces of information.

“A crime scene vehicle is being sent to the area to see how much of information, exhibits and things, bits and pieces, that can be recovered from that scene that will aid our investigation.

“Everything that we need to do will be done swiftly and we will follow all the lead that we can get to make sure that whoever carried out or sponsored that act do not go unpunished,” he added.

Schoolgirls’ Rescue: Anglican Primate Commends Police

AnglicanThe Anglican Primate, Arch Bishop Nicholas Okoh, has commended the Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode and the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni for the rescue of the three girls abducted from Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary.

Arch Bishop Okoh, who led a delegation from the Anglican Church, praised the promptness of the rescue efforts for the abducted schoolgirls.

Describing his visit as a “thank you visit”, he told Channels TV that the Church was grateful for “what the Police has done under the leadership of the Governor of the state”.

“We believe that they have performed exceptionally well,” he said.

Speaking about the kidnap of the girls, he said, “I was very devastated because (they were) young women out in the cold day and night. We couldn’t sleep.

“So when we got the news that they have been rescued, we bounced back.”

He disclosed that the Anglican Church has since raised the standard of security at the school in terms of physical structure and also employed more security personnel to guard the school.

“We seek to work more closely with the Police and other security agencies,” he added.

In his reaction, the Commissioner of Police said that the visit was a morale booster which would encourage the Police to do more.

Three Abducted Students Released In Lagos

abductedThe three female students who were abducted from the Babington Junior Seminary in Ikorodu, Lagos State have been released.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni says the girls were found at the Igbokuta area of Ikorodu.

Mr. Owoseni says the girls are hale and hearty and were not molested by their abductors.

The Police Commissioner also disclosed to Channels Television that three arrests have been made in line with the abduction.

The gunmen on February 29 gained entry into the school, by breaking the perimeter fence which served as protection for the boarding students and forcefully took the girls away.

In the meantime, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has also confirmed the release of the girls from Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School in Ikorodu and at the same time their abductors have been arrested.

The Governor announced this in a press briefing at the government house in Alausa, Lagos.

Governor Ambode also assured the people of Lagos State of his administration’s zero tolerance to all criminal activities in the state.

 

 

Police Seek Lagos Residents’ Support To Improve Security

PoliceThe Nigeria Police Force has urged the residents of Lagos State (Lagosians) to continually support the force to enhance the security architecture of the state.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, made the appeal on Saturday during an interview with Channels Television at the force’s Headquarters in Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial capital.

He said: “We look forward to people in Lagos cooperating with us, giving us information timely, being more cautious of their environment and of course knowing that we all have obligations”.

Mr Owoseni also called on Lagosians to be more committed to the safety of lives and property, urging them to see it as their responsibilities and not just the Police’s.

“We have obligations to ourselves in order for us to be safe and secure and that no other person can make us safe other than ourselves,” he said.

The Police Commissioner cautioned erring motorcyclists and street traders to desist from their illicit activities and asked the residents to stop patronising them.

“Those vices like street trading, motorcyclists violating the law on restriction of motorcycles to certain areas; that is not just about them. It is about all of us playing our parts by not patronising the motorcyclists where they are not supposed to ply,” the Police boss said.

Police Parade Suspected Crime Perpetrators In Lagos

Rivers-policeOver 40 suspects have been paraded by the Lagos State Police Command for their involvement in crimes across the state.

Although some of the suspects alleged that they were picked up indiscriminately in motor parks and stores, others however said they were arrested for armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism.

Speaking on the arrest, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, explained that some of the suspects are those terrorising motorists in traffic gridlock across the city.

Mr. Owoseni however warned road users to be vigilant and stop patronising hawkers in traffic, so as to avert robbery attempt.

Ojuelegba Container Accident Suspect Arrested, Says Lagos CP

CP-Lagos-owoseniThe Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Fatai Owoseni, said on Monday that the person suspected to be responsible for a recent trailer accident that occurred at Ojuelegba, in Lagos State, has been arrested and charged.

The CP said that the owner of the truck was also in Police custody.

According to him, the suspect is said to be charged for contravention of traffic laws and manslaughter.

Speaking to Channels Television, Mr Owoseni stated that one of the best ways to prevent such occurrences was to twist-lock the container on the truck.

He also said that other measures would be to ensure that containers that are not twist-locked do not leave the port.

“We won’t even allow those trucks that are carrying containers that are not twist-locked to get out of the port”.

The Police Commissioner further said that plans were on to establish a collaboration with the Ports Authority and other stakeholders, to check the tonnage of the trucks before they carry equipment.
