NDLEA Arrests 25 Drug Addicts in Kaduna

cocaine-NDLEAThe Kaduna State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has arrested 25 suspected drug addicts and traffickers in different parts of the state.

The agency also recovered hard drugs of different substances from the suspects during various raids conducted at various parts of the state last week.

Parading the suspects in his office on Thursday, the State NDLEA Commandant, Mr Samuel Azike, said they were arrested at the notorious black street in Sabon Tasha, Kawo, Kigo road and constitution road, all within the state capital, following a tip off from members of the public.

He disclosed that illicit substances including cannabis, cocaine, rophenol, tramadol and heroin were seized from the drug traffickers.

While stating that most of the crimes in the state are drug related, the NDLEA Commander vowed that the suspects would be charged to court in order to serve as a deterrent to other addicts and traffickers.

He advised commercial bus and luxurious drivers not to carry illicit drugs for traffickers with their vehicles, warning that any driver caught in such act would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Mr Azike also reassured that the command would intensify sensitisation campaign against the use and hawking of illicit drugs to save the public from its harmful effects.

Some of the suspects however denied their involvement in the drug related offence and asked the agency to release them.

APC Supporters Embark On Road Show In Kaduna

apcAhead of next Saturday’s presidential election, supporters of the All Progressives Congress  (APC) in Kaduna State, on Tuesday, embarked on a road show to drum support for the party’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari and the state governorship flag bearer, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

During the road show rally, the APC members expressed confidence that their party would be victorious in the coming elections and however vowed to occupy all over Nigeria if the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attempts to rig the elections.

They described the party’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buahri and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai as credible candidates adding that they are the”choice of Nigerians in the elections given their incorruptible stance”.

The road show, tagged ‘Walking for Change’, witnessed a large crowd of APC members in Kaduna State and the party’s governorship candidate, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, trekking from the Command junction in the southern part of the State capital to Kawo, in the northern zone.

Women, children and youth all trooped in large numbers, singing and dancing.

Walking slowly and patiently, the surging crowd passed through the popular Ahmadu Bello Stadium to Ali Akilu road, where they appealed to residents of the areas to vote for APC in next Saturday’s election and subsequent ones on April 11.

For the supporters, their decision to participate in the over ten kilometers walk was borne out of their desire for a positive change, which they claimed APC stands for.

The supporters however, said that their power is their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC).

Governor Yero Flags Off Dualisation Of Kawo-Station Road

governor yeroGovernor of Kaduna state, Mukhtar Yero, has flagged off the dualization of 14 kilometer Kawo-Station-Command Junction road project, being a decongestant to the heavy traffic usually experienced by motorists in the state capital.

While speaking at the flag-off in Kawo, Kaduna North Local Government Area, Governor Yero said his administration was totally committed to the infrastructural development of the state and would also complete all ongoing projects inherited from his predecessors.

The road, which is a gateway into the state capital, is among the infrastructural challenges facing residents of the capital, which the state government is working hard to address.

The governor, at the flag-off ceremony said the dualization of the road is another promise made and kept by his administration to the people of the state, adding that the project is aimed at reliefing traffic and beautifying the city.

Speaking earlier, the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Mr Bashir Aliyu, said the road would be completed in three phases, with one starting from Kawo to Lugard Hall Roundabout, while the second commences from Lugard Roundabout to Station Roundabout and the final phase would be from Station Roundabout to Command Junction.

Residents in the area commended the state government’s effort at reducing traffic in the city centre and making roads in other parts of the state passable for motorists.

The road dualisation project, which include parking lots and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, is being handled by Mothercat Nigeria Ltd and would be completed in 15 months at the cost of over N3.6 Billion.

So far, the administration of Governor Yero,  has completed over 30 roads both within the state capital and rural communities across the state.

Jonathan Will Win Kaduna With Over Two Million Votes – Sambo

SamboVice President Namadi Sambo, on Monday, boasted that Kaduna State would give over two million votes to President Goodluck Jonathan in the February 14, 2015 presidential election.

Although Sambo lost his ward and Kaduna State to the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011, he maintains that with the overwhelming support the Peoples Democratic Party enjoys in the state, the party would emerge victorious in the presidential and other elections come 2015.

A statement by his spokesman, Umar Sani, on Monday, quoted Sambo while speaking during a meeting of the Kaduna chapter of the PDP held at the Hassan Usman Katsina House, Kawo, Kaduna.

Sambo was further quoted as saying that he expected 100 per cent victory for the party’s candidates in other elective posts including that of the governor.

“Kaduna State PDP is the same and one strong family, and I am happy for the promise they have kept and for the promise they have made to us, that Insha Allah, PDP is Kaduna State and Kaduna State is PDP, and PDP will win the elections come 2015.

“It is only PDP today in Nigeria that has its presence in the state, local government, ward and polling unit level. This representation is full and strong all over the federation,” the statement quoted the Vice President.

He added that the President was delighted that the primary elections held in the state were rancour-free.

“We believe that there are no losers, no winners and no vanquished and everybody will be carried along.

“Everyone of our party member that participated in our primary agrees that it is only one person that can be a winner and they have agreed to cooperate and work together,” the statement said.

Kaduna Govt Releases 6.7 Billion Naira Pension Funds

yero2As part of the efforts to ameliorate the sufferings of pensioners, the Kaduna state Government has presented cheques worth over 6.7 Billion Naira to retired civil servants who have served the state meritoriously.

Speaking during the flag off ceremony for distribution of cheques worth over 600 Million Naira to the 1080 retired local government workers at the State House in Kawo, Governor Muktar Yero said his administration has paid a total of 4.7 billion as backlog of retirement benefits for the State Civil Servants dating back to seven years. He explained that the government was saving about 350 million Naira monthly to settle arrears of retirement benefits inherited by his administration.

He also stated that the state had increased its monthly contribution of 13.03 million naira to 65 million Naira, which is about 400% increase.

While pledging the commitment of the State Government to ensuring prompt payment of pensions and other retirement benefits, Governor Yero apologised to the retirees and next of-Kin of dead beneficiaries over the delay in payment of their entitlements, and assured them that his administration would do everything possible to enhance their livelihood and those yet to be retired.

He also announced that government will soon commence a more comprehensive Pre-retirement Skills and Entrepreneurship Training Programme, to equip retirees with viable means of livelihood after service.

The flag-off ceremony marked the commencement of presentation of cheques to 1,080 beneficiaries from the 23 Local Governments Areas who had served the state and retired between 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 to 2012.

It was a happy moment for the senior citizens when they filed out one by one to receive their entitlements from the governor, some of them having spent up to three years without collecting their retirement benefits.

The amount covers accrued pension, arrears of outside pensioners, arrears of verified pensioners, death Benefit and retirement benefit.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the payment of the backlog of the pension and gratuity arrears while commending the modalities adopted by the Yero administration towards sources for pension funds.

The decision to clear all backlogs of pensions and gratuities of retired civil servants, according to Governor Yero, was to fast-track the payment and reduce huge pension liabilities that had accrued over the years.

It is expected that the wealth of experience that this pensioners have acquired over the years in service is an added advantage in terms of initiating viable ventures with the money.

In line with the expectations, the governor said: “It is important for them to diversify other means of generating income and not to rely solely on their monthly pension”.

Kaduna Bombing: Yero Visits Buhari, Scene of Blast

yeroThe Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Yero, has visited the scenes of Wednesday’s bomb blast at Kawo and Alkilu road that claimed at least 72 lives.

Yero, who arrived the scene of the blasts at about 10.am, was briefed at the spots where the two bombs went off by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Shehu.

The Governor, who was accompanied by his deputy, Nuhu Bajoga, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abbah and heads of other security agencies in the state, also visited the former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, at his residence to condole him over the second bomb blast that almost claimed his life.

He spent about few minutes before moving to the 44 Army Reference Hospital where those who sustained varying degrees of injuries were receiving treatment and where the death toll had risen to 76 as at Thursday afternoon.

A total of 37 injured victims were receiving treatment at the 44 Army Reference hospitals, and the Chief Medical Director, Mohammed Abdullahi, said that all of them were responding to treatment.

The Governor, after he was conducted round the wards where the injured were being attended to by the hospital’s CMD, spoke with journalists.

While condoling with the victims, Yero described the insurgency as one of the darkest phases of the country’s history, saying that it was regrettable that while some Nigerians were busy engaging in nation building, some others were busy killing their compatriots.

General Buhari, while hosting the Governor, absolved any religion of being responsible for the spate of insurgency in the country, urging all Nigerians to collectively fight the war against terror.

Also, in an exclusive interview with Channels Television, Buhari said that he was hale and hearty, and described the attack on him as unfortunate but his survival of the attack as an act of God.

Meanwhile, the entire Kaduna town has been deserted as a result of the 24-hour curfew put in place by the State Governor. Our correspondent who went round the city reported that all markets, schools, business premises and offices remained locked.

Bomb Blast Was An Attempt On My Life – Buhari

buhariFormer Head of State and popular northern politician, Gen Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) has described a bomb attack that affected his convoy as an assassination attempt.

Describing how he narrowly escaped the attack on Wednesday, July 23, in Kaduna, the former military Head of State said he was the target of the bomber.

“I was personally involved in a clearly targeted bomb attack today along Ali Akilu Road, Kawo-Kaduna at about 2:30pm on my way to Daura,” Mr. Buhari said.

“The unfortunate event, clearly an assassination attempt, came from a fast moving vehicle that made many attempts to overtake my security car but was blocked by my escort vehicle.

“We reached the market area of Kawo where he took advantage of our slowing down and attempted to ram my car and instantly detonated the bomb which destroyed all the three cars in our convoy,” Mr. Buhari said.

The former leader said when he came down from his vehicle, he saw many dead bodies littered around.

“They were innocent people going about their daily business who became victims of mass murder,” he said.

The attack on the former Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) followed an earlier blast in Kaduna on Wednesday, targeting a senior Islamic cleric, Dahiru Bauchi, who also escaped unhurt.

NDLEA, Army Raid Kaduna, Arrest Suspected Drug Barons, Addicts

NDLEAA combined team of officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Army, Air Force and Civil Defence Corps today raided Sabon Tasha and Kawo areas, a suburb for notorious criminals’ hideout in the Kaduna state capital.

The operation which lasted many hours, led to the arrest of 50 suspected drug addicts and over one hundred addicts as well as seizure of various kilogrammes of narcotics such as cannabis, cocaine and heroin.

Parading some of the suspects, Kaduna State NDLEA Commander, Mohammed Jibrin told Channels Television that the aim of the operation is to flush out criminals out of the state and make it peaceful ahead of the 2015 general elections, warning that Kaduna is no longer a safe haven for illicit drug users or traders.

The commander added that the operation was the third this year since the inauguration of the Joint Task Force by the state governor in December 2013.

He commended the Nigerian Army, Civil Defence Corps for giving the needed backup because of the notoriety of the area.

Giving an insight on the operation, the Assistant State Commander in Charge of Operations, Goody Obanoke, said the suspected drug peddlers would be prosecuted after investigation while the users  are to be taken to the agency’s facility in Zaria for counselling and rehabilitation.

He  urged stakeholders to support the NDLEA towards the eradication of illegal drugs in the society.

Suspicious Package Causes Bomb Scare In kaduna

An item suspected to be bomb found in Kaduna town on Wednesday afternoon caused panic and pandemonium in the city.

Security men said they found a box dropped along the busy Ali Akilu road in the state capital, following reports, by passers-by of a suspicious package suspected to be a bomb.

Security operatives and anti-bomb police personnel who were hurriedly drafted to the scene cordoned off the location, the busy road that connects motorists from the popular Sheik Abubakar Gumi market to Kawo.

The scene is directly opposite the headquarters of Defence Industries Company of Nigeria (DICON), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), banks, public offices and several  business premises.

The package, according to security agencies and the Director General media to the Kaduna state governor, Ahmed Miyaki was a box containing some personal items said to have fallen down from a commercial bus.

Mr. Miyaki however assured residents of their safety and advised them to go about their normal businesses.
