Kogi Election: PDP Agent Rejects Results From Adavi, Okene

 

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected election results from two local government areas in Kogi State.

At the INEC collation office in Lokoja, the PDP’s agent, Mr. Joe Agada stated that the figures reeled out by the Collection Officers were outrageous.

Mr. Agada reacted majorly to results from Adavi and Okene Local Government Areas, where the ruling All Progressive Congress won with a very humongous margin.

According to results as reeled out by the Collection Officers of the two local government areas in question, the All Progressives Congress polled – 64,657 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party polled – 366 votes in Adavi and in Okene, the APC polled 112,762 votes while the PDP polled only 139 votes.

Reacting to the results from Adavi, Mr. Agada argued that the turnout of voters reported by the collation officer is false.

In the case of Okene LGA, the PDP agent said that it is surprising that all of a sudden, the voters’ statistics for the council has changed in the gubernatorial election, away from what it was in the Presidential election conducted earlier in the year.

He strongly condemned the results and urged the electoral body to disregard the figures as presented, stating that the anomalies are outrageous.

In reply to Mr. Agada’s take on the results, Professor Ibrahim Umar, the Returning Officer of the Kogi Governorship election, asked the PDP agent to put his observations and complaints to paper, and file it at the appropriate quarters.

Prof. Umar, the Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, noted that at the appropriate time, the electoral body will look into the complaints of all parties involved and act accordingly.

 

Kogi Govt. Warns Those In Possession Of Illegal Arms To Surrender It

Yahaya-Bello-Governor-Kogi-StateThe Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has given seven days ultimatum to those in possession of fire arms and ammunition, in the central senatorial district of the state to surrender them to security agents or face the full wrath of the law.

Gov. Bello who gave the warning in Okene, the Headquarters of Central Senatorial District of Kogi state during a stakeholders meeting on the security challenges in the area, said the security and safety of Ebira land is pivotal to the security of the nation.

He also stressed that the geographical location of the district was enough for the government to take a decisive action in tackling insecurity in the area.

The insecurity challenges that as bedeviled the area which is made up of five Local Government Area is of top discussion.

The hall was filled to the capacity with the elder statesman, traditional ruler from various clan, National House of Assembly members, youths, top government functionaries all from Central Senatorial District are all in attendance.

Governor Bello, in his opening remark welcome the people to the town hall meeting, while he urged them to speak out their mind without fear, he said this will go a long way in saving the land from miscreant.

”Today we are here holding a town hall meeting with respect to security challenges not only in Kogi state,but in Central Senatorial District comprising of five local government, Okene, Okehi, Adavi, Ajaokuta and Ogori-mangogo.

”These senatorial areas are dominantly by Ebira people, If I am not mistaken we are 90 percent of Ebira people in these Senatorial Districts”.

The Governor had recently ordered the demolition of over 15 buildings in Okene that had been identifed as kidnappers den discovered with arms.

“This is the first time the people will come together to brain storm on  how to tackle the insecurity situation which has been a daily event since the creation of the state, while previous government paid no attention.

One of the elder statesman, Dr. Tom Adaba, who spoke to Channels Television  lamented over the incessant criminal activities in the area which had brought disgrace to the land, while he appealed to the Governor not to spear any one in his quest to rid the district of criminal element.

“The governor is making an attempt in wiping them out which is the best thing to do and having started, it is only right and proper that he gets to hear what the people think about it” Dr. Adaba lamented.

Also speaking, the Asema of Ezuka CLAN, Momoh Sani Isa, while thanking the governor for fighting crime in the area, he identified politicians as the problem, he said they formed the habit of arming thugs to unleash terror on their opponent.

“What almost destroyed the effort of the traditional ruler in tackling crime is dirty politics you know when the time come for politicians to campaign most of them don’t even regard the traditional rulers as people because they know, this people have no voice at the top and in an effort to get supporters they will not do what is right at whatever level, Isa added.

The Governor while speaking with newsmen warned politicians in the district who armed thugs to retrieve the weapons and hand them over to the nearest police station, to avoid being caught by the law.

Governor Bello also said there will be no sacred cow in the fight against criminality in the state.

Boko Haram Members, Armed Bandit Paraded In Lokoja

Boko HaramAbout 17 suspected criminals and Boko Haram terrorist who have been hibernating within Kogi State have been nabbed and paraded by the Nigerian Army in Lokoja, the state capital.

The Commandant, Chari Maigumeri Barracks in Lokoja, Brigadier General Henry Ayamasaowea while parading the suspects before the State Governor, Yahaya Bello said they were picked up following a special operation by the Nigerian Army, Navy and the DSS, who have been working around the clock in the last three weeks in the state to put an end to the kidnapping and invasion of insurgents into the state.

Meanwhile, apart from the Boko Haram members nabbed by the joint operation, those arrested and paraded also include the hoodlums that attacked a police station in Eika, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi state where two police officers were killed.

Some of the items recovered from the terrorist are several Ak 47, locally made guns, 12 masks of different size, ammunition, dagger, pump action guns, grenade and explosives devises.

The Commandant, briefed the governor on how the 17 suspects were all arrested in Okene and its environs, he said the joint operation combed the entire central senatorial district of the state and the insurgence have invaded Kogi state after the military success in Sambisa forest.

The Operation Officer Lieutenant Colonel, Tosin Ayoola also gave the governor a breakdown on what they have on ground, he identified the suspects as members of the Boko Haram and not a suspect.

However, Governor Bello said, “If the joint task-force will build on the tempo adopted in arresting this suspected terrorist, then crime will be reduced within the shortest time in Kogi state”.

Eid-el-Fitr: Governor Bello Challenges Muslims On Global Peace

Eid-el-Fitr, Muslims, Yahaya Bello, Kogi State, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has asked Muslims around the world to restore the global peace that has been challenged by wars and economic instability.

Governor Bello stated this after observing his prayer on Wednesday in commemoration of the Eid-el-Fitr in Okene, Kogi State.

He also urged the civil servants in the state to be law abiding, saying government was doing its best to provide them the dividends of democracy.

The Governor added that his administration was on track to re-position Kogi State through quality education, efficient healthcare delivery and youth empowerment.

He also assured the people of the state in north-central Nigeria of better days ahead.

The people of Okene could not hide their joy as it was the first time a sitting governor will travel down to the town to observe prayers during festivity.

Customary Court Of Appeal Judge Kidnapped In Kogi

Rickey TarfaA judge of the Customary Court of Appeal in Kogi State has been kidnapped along Eika-Itakpe road.

Ishaq Usman, who was on his way back to Lokoja from Okene were he went to spend the weekend with his family was abducted around 3:00pm on Sunday while his orderly was killed.

The driver to the Judge, who was said to have been shot at, has been unconscious and receiving treatment at the Okene general hospital.

Confirming the incident to Channels Television’s Lokoja correspondent, a staff of the judiciary said that the judge hail from Okene, and was on his way back to Lokoja before he was abducted.

This is not the first time judges are being kidnapped in Kogi State.

In May, two judges were kidnapped and were said to have regained freedom after payment of ransom.

Kogi PDP Rally: Wada Promises To Improve Living Standards

WadaThe Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has called on the people of Kogi State to re-elect Governor Idris Wada for another term in view of his achievements in the last three and half years in office.

Secondus stated this in Okene – the headquarters of the central senatorial district while presenting the party flag to Capt. Wada.

He told the Kogi electorate that if the state wants to move forward in terms of developmental projects, there were no alternatives to Wada.

Thousands of the PDP supporters came out to the Ohinoyi Pavilion in Okene, the venue of the PDP zonal rally.

PDP governors, national and state legislators, and national executives also attended the carnival-like event.

They took turns to deliver their speeches, all asking the electorates to vote Capt. Idris Wada for another term.

They described Wada as a man of integrity who is prudent in spending and has respect for traditional institutions, youth and women.

Capt. Wada, in his speech, promised to improve the living standard of the people of the central senatorial districts and the entire state if elected.

He recounted some of his achievements in the last three years and half and promised to consolidate on his successes.

Kogi State To Undergo City Structural Plans

Kogi StateThe Kogi State Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, has said that four cities in the state, Lokoja, Kabba, Okene and Dekina, are to undergo city structural plans to ensure sustainable long term development in the state.

He disclosed this at the opening ceremony of a training workshop organized by the UN-habitat.

In partnership with the Kogi State Government, the event was to help in formulating appropriate urban legislation, as well as develop an integrated solid waste management plan and an early warning system for climate change to the state.

The Director and Chief Scientific Adviser, UN-habitat, Prof. Oyebanji Oyeyinka, said that the workshop was aimed at addressing urban informality, design and planning environment stating that the structure plan would check chaotic urbanization.

Speaking on the planned restructuring, he added that when completed, the project would allow people in the four mentioned cities to live in consonance with the best global practices.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands and Housing, Sani Adamu, also briefed the audience on some of the step taken by the present administration in making the state a mega city.

Kogi State was created out of the old Benue and Kwara states in August 1999. It has 21 Local Government Areas in the state with a total population of 3.5 million by the 2005 census.

Lokoja, which is presently the capital city of the state, is said to have no structural plan, with houses that were built without due consideration to other factors.

Experts have called on stakeholders to key into the city structural plan so as to avoid the pitfalls associated with failed cities.

Kogi Police Repel Attacks On Adogo Police Station

Kogi PoliceAt about 9PM on Sunday September 22, 2014, unknown gunmen unleashed a heavy attack on Adogo Police Station, in the Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, the attack from different directions of Okene, Ajaokuta, and one other route, was apparently targeted at carting away Police arms.

The Policemen on duty, swiftly took positions and returned fire. The heavy dynamite launched by the attackers, demolished and set fire on part of the station.

The desire of the hoodlums to cart away arms, was aborted, as the Police successfully evacuated the arms from the station, to safety,” the statement read.

The statement further stated that no human casualty was recorded on the part of the Kogi Police personnel while some of the hoodlums escaped with bullet wounds.

However, the area has been reinforced while frantic efforts are ongoing to track-down the fleeing hoodlums.

The Kogi Police Command has appealed to members of the public, to report anybody seen with bullet wound of any sort to the nearby Police Station or other security agencies.

Adekunle Among Most Celebrated Military Commanders Of His Generation – Jonathan

AdekunleNigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has extended commiserations to the family of late Brigadier-General Benjamin Adekunle, who passed away on Saturday.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, the President joins the family and other Nigerians “in mourning the very courageous soldier who achieved national fame during the Nigerian civil war for his gallant leadership of the 3rd Marine Commandoes in the successful effort to defend the unity and territorial integrity of the country.

President Jonathan believes that General Adekunle’s civil war heroics, which made him easily one of the most celebrated military commanders of his generation, have ensured that he will always be honoured and remembered as a valiant soldier who served his fatherland exceptionally well at a very trying time in its history.

As the Black Scorpion’s soul returns to the Almighty Creator, President Jonathan enjoins his family, friends, former military colleagues and all who mourn his passing to also give thanks to God for blessing the nation with fearless soldiers and patriots of his calibre who stand ready to lay down their lives for the peace, unity and progress of their country.”

President Jonathan prayed that God Almighty would comfort the grieving family and associates of General Adekunle and grant his departed soul eternal rest.

Obasanjo, Amosun Mourn Benjamin Adekunle

ObasanjoFormer President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has has joined other prominent Nigerians describing the death of the late General Benjamin Adekunle as shocking.

In a statement in Abeokuta, Obasanjo said that the contribution of Adekunle during the country’s civil war was a no mean efforts, which would be remembered for so long a time.

According to the former president, “I received with shock the news of the death of my colleague, friend and course-mate, Gen. Benjamin Adekunle today. I can recall with fond memories what he was able to achieve as a course-mate at Teshi, Accra Ghana.”

He added that the late retired General, “made no mean contribution for the Nigerian civil war. His efforts would be forever remembered and May his soul rest in peace. I am very shocked about by this news today,” Obasanjo stated.

He expressed his condolence to the family of the late retired General, affirming that “his vacuum will be difficult to fill in the family, but, I pray for them to have the fortitude to bear this loss.”

The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, is also mourning the demise of one of the Nation’s gallant military officers, describing him as a civil war hero.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Wakama, Amosun said that he was greatly saddened by the news of the death of the war veteran.

He said that the incident happened at a time the wisdom and knowledge of the likes of General Adekunle is needed to curb the unfortunate acts of insurgents in the nation.

This is so sad. Black Scorpion, as he was fondly called, played a significant role in the unity and search for peace in our country as he fought gallantly in the Nigerian Civil War, principally to preserve its sanctity as a leader of the 3rd Marine Commando.

“History has recorded him well. His name cannot be easily forgotten in the history of modern day Nigeria,” the governor said.

Amosun commiserated with the family of the deceased, the Nigerian Army, as well as his friends and associates, praying that almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

General Benjamin Adekunle: Black Scorpion Dies At 78

The Nigerian Civil War Army veteran, Retired General Benjamin Adekunle, popularly known as Black Scorpion has died.

Retired General Adekunle died Saturday morning in Lagos, Nigeria’s south-west region at the age of 78.

General Adekunle was born in Kaduna. His father was a native of Ogbomosho, while his mother was of the Bachama tribe.

He underwent secondary education at the Government College, Okene, in present day Kogi State.Black Scorpion

He enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 1958 shortly after completing his school certificate examinations. 

He passed the Army selection examinations and thereafter was despatched to the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the UK, the British Army’s initial officer entry academy.

He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on December 15, 1960.

NDLEA Arrests Graduate With Indian Hemp Weighing 89.3 Kg

The Kogi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 300 level student of the Kogi State University in Ayingba with a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa weighing 89.3 kg.

The state commander of NDLEA, Mohammed Bello, who disclosed this while parading two other suspected drug dealers at the state headquarters of the command in Lokoja, also stated that illicit drugs dealers were on the increase in the state.

Kunle Awogbemila, a 300 level student studying Banking and Finance at the Kogi State University, from Ondo state, said he had been in the drug business since November 2013.

He told journalists that he had ventured into the illegal trade because his father divorced his mother and refused to take up his education bills.

Another suspect arrested for his involvement in the crime, Saliu Momoh, was the driver conveying the drugs to Ageva in Okene before he was arrested.

However, the NDLEA boss who said he was not buying their explanations told Channels Television how they were arrested.

He said that illicit drugs dealers were on the increase in the state and that over 6,000 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa were confiscated in 2013, while over 4,000 kilogrammes was destroyed in 2012.

He also paraded a partially blind man, Ezekiel Yerima who was once arrested for drug dealing but was later discharged by the court due to his disability.
