Edo Election: PDP Grants Obaseki, Deputy Waiver To Contest

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has granted the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, a waiver to contest for elective office on its platform.

This comes days after the governor dumped the All Progressives Congress and consequently, picked up his PDP membership card at the party’s secretariat in Benin City, the state capital today.

Addressing party officials, the governor said he automatically becomes the PDP leader in the state following his defection.

Obaseki also reiterated his commitment to providing what he described as quality leadership, adding that he is ready to lead the party to victory in the September 19 governorship election.

After displaying his membership card, he said: “I automatically become the leader of this party. I want to assure all of you (that) I am prepared to provide leadership.

“I am prepared to provide leadership that will lead this party to victory. I am prepared to provide leadership that will not only put PDP into office in Edo State but as a ruling party in Edo State, we will make sure that the level of progress, growth and participation in the political system and our people is unrivalled in this country.

“I am very happy to be here. With the reception I have received since I drove in here has been ecstatic. The energy I see in this party is the kind of energy I require to take Edo to the level we should go to next.”

Obaseki, Akiolu Attack: Oshiomhole’s Comment, ‘Slip Of Tongue’ – Shaibu

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has apologised to commercial motorcyclists popularly known as ‘Okada riders’ in the state on behalf of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for describing them as thugs.

Mr. Shaibu’s apology is connected to the claims by the APC leader that the convoy of the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, was attacked by motorcyclists at the home of Mr. Oshiomhole, after the Edo state university’s convocation ceremony.

Mr. Oshiomhole had linked the thugs who attacked the convoy of Governor Obaseki as loyalists to Mr. Shaibu.

The deputy governor who hosted a delegation from the motorcyclist union at the government house in Benin City, the Edo state capital, explained to them that the comments were a slip of tongue from the part of Mr. Oshiomhole.

“I want to correct the news by our national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole that the Okada riders are thugs, you are not thugs and I want to apologise on his behalf to tell you people maybe it was a slip of tongue.

“You people are never thugs; you cannot be thugs because if what we have done with you and you are technology-driven and you are talking, you can’t be referred as thugs; not even when he rode on your back to victory at the tribunal.”

He added that after a long-serving relationship with the APC national chairman, it was unexplainable to have such comment served at the motorcyclists.

“Every morning, you were always at his house in your hundreds and most cases we rode on your back to the tribunal. So how come now you are being referred to as thugs, I think it was a slip of tongue, so on his behalf, I apologise to all of you.”

Thugs Who Attacked Us Are Loyalists To Edo Deputy Governor, Says Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole has linked the thugs who attacked the Edo state Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and the Chancellor of the Edo University, Iyahmo, Dr. Aderemi Makanjuola, to the Deputy Governor of the state, Philip Shaibu.

Mr. Oshiomhole in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Simon Ebegbulem, after the incident, described the thugs who invaded his Iyamho country home as loyalists to Mr. Shaibu.

Dignitaries including Governor Obaseki had attended the maiden convocation ceremony of the Edo University, Iyahmo and honoured a lunch invitation at the home of Mr. Oshiomhole, when the thugs launched an attack on the vehicles belonging to the APC Chieftain kinsmen.

The statement narrated that tension in the community started on Friday when the deputy governor imported thugs into the community with a view to intimidate political opponents.

It added that during the convocation ceremony, the Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele who delivered a lecture, had called for calm when the thugs who had gained entrance into the school premises, started disturbing the public.

“Security agents helped to ensure peace before the event started. As a matter of fact, Comrade Oshiomhole left the event through the back so as to avoid being attacked by the thugs who laid siege at the entrance gate of the university.”

It further recounted the build-up to the attack, adding that; “the governor, the National Chairman of APC, Comrade Oshiomhole and other guests were already in the hall when at about 11:30 am, the deputy governor stormed the University with over 200 Okada riders and thugs.

“The deputy governor rode to the event in one of the motorcycles. Security operatives accosted them at the gate and refused them entrance. The thugs started threatening the security operatives who insisted the deputy governor can enter the venue but they will not allow the thugs to gain access.

“Following their threats the security operatives tear-gassed the thugs and the deputy governor; the thugs were dispersed while the deputy governor joined other dignitaries at the venue.

“This created tension already in the small community,” it added.

After the incident in the school, the statement explained that the invited guests made their way to Mr. Oshiomhole’s country home, where the whole attack happened.

“After the event, Comrade Oshiomhole left instructions at the gate that he was expecting these respected leaders. So when the visitors came, the governor (Obaseki) drove in a bus with other officials but following the incident that occurred earlier where thugs sponsored by the deputy governor invaded the university, Iyamho youths barricaded the gate of the national chairman with a view to protecting him against any harm.

“These youths sighted Andrew Momodu, Osaigbovo Iyoha on the bus which conveyed the governor to Oshiomhole’s residence. They decided to stop them from entering the compound because these were the same people who led the thugs that attacked Oshiomhole’s residence in Benin City penultimate week.”

The statement clarified that no vehicle in the convoy of Governor Obaseki was destroyed.

“The thugs targeted the vehicles belonging to Oshiomhole’s relations and friend and destroyed them. Thank God for the intervention of soldiers and other security operatives who came to restore peace.

Fashola Blames Poor Power Generation On Vandalism

Fashola Blames Poor Power Generation On VandalismThe Minister Of Power, Works And Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has blamed Nigeria’s recent drop in power generation, on acts of vandalism on the gas pipelines at the Ihovbor Power Plant in Edo state.

Mr Fashola made the claims during an inspection of the 14 km Benin-Lokoja road reconstruction project at the Aduwawa axis in Benin City, the Edo state capital, as part of his assessment of projects being handled by his ministry in the state.

“There is about 3,000 mw of power that is not available because of vandalisation, that is not helpful to the country.

“If we add that 3,000 mw to the 4,000mw we have, then we get to 7,000 mw- that is the kind of progress needed,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has called for quick intervention on the failed portions of the Benin-Auchi road, among other dilapidated roads in the state.

“There is one other place just by Ramat park, the place is caving in and we need to do something quick”.

Damaged Pipelines

The minister has been speaking on reforms that would ameliorate power failure and the general living standards of Nigerians.

He also said the nation’s current power generation will rise to 6,000 megawatts if the damaged oil pipelines in the Niger delta are restored.

He made this known while speaking at the monthly Power Sector and Stakeholders Meeting which took place at the Olorunsogo injection sub-station of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IEDC).

A group that calls themselves the Niger Delta Avengers have claimed responsibility for attacks on oil and gas facilities in the region, gradually dipping the nation’s oil production which had hit 2.4 million barrels per day in the post-amnesty era.

For a nation that depends largely on sales of crude oil for its revenue, further drop in production at a time of volatile oil prices is a huge threat to the her economy.

This is why the acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has assured the Niger Delta  region of the Federal Government’s readiness to genuinely draw a roadmap, that will  lead to the peace and development of oil producing states.

This formed the core of the meetings he had with government officials and traditional rulers in Gbaramatu Kingdom in Delta State, Bayelsa state, where he has visited in the last couple of weeks as well as Rivers state, where he visited on Monday, February 13.

“The walkways are not created for market trading, ab initio it’s a crime to trade on it as there is a law on walkways in Edo state.

“So they that are trading on that ignorantly they should know that there is a law and very soon the law will catch up on them.

“We will enforce the law to the fullest because elsewhere deviants are the ones that pay for those that obey the law, for those that obey the law to enjoy.

“You can be a progressive opposition only to the extent that you challenge government on the wrong that they do not for the good that they do.

“If cleaning the street for the benefit of all is to the benefit of all then the opposition should join hands with us when we start cleaning the street,” the Deputy Governor said.
