Rape Victim, Uwaila Omozuwa, Buried In Benin

The remains of Uwaila Omozuwa, the 100-level microbiology undergraduate at the University of Benin, who was raped and attacked violently in Benin-city, was laid to rest on Friday.

Omozuwa was buried at the ‘Third Cemetary’ in New Benin, Benin-city, with family members, friends, and well-wishers in attendance.

Prior to the interment, a funeral service was held for her at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Peace Sanctuary), Edo Province 10 Headquarters, located along WAEC road, Aduwawa.

She was allegedly gang-raped and bludgeoned in a church at the Agbor park axis in Benin-city in May.

She died days later at the hospital while recovering from injuries sustained during the violent attack.

In August, the police paraded six persons arrested in connection with the crime.

The police on Wednesday paraded six persons allegedly connected with the rape and killing of Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the University of Benin.

Uwaila, 22, was raped and murdered in a church in May, a tragedy that sent shock-waves across the country and repeated calls for an end to gender-based violence.

The hoodlums reportedly struck her in the head with a fire extinguisher after raping her and left her for dead.

She was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where she later died.

According to the Edo State Police Command, one of the suspects admitted to have committed the crime and named others he said were culpable.

At least four of the suspects have denied any involvement.

Another suspect was said to have been found in possession of the late Uwaila’s phone.

The mother of a suspect at large was also arrested. She denied any knowledge of the crime.

“These criminals went into the church building to wreak havoc where she was raped,” the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, said. “The post-mortem examination results confirmed that she was raped and gruesomely murdered.

#JusticeForUwa: Students Protest In Benin, Demand Death Sentence For Sex Offenders

Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday occupied major streets of Benin City, the Edo state capital in protest.

The students demanded justice for Uwaila Omozuwa, an undergraduate of the University of Benin who was recently raped and killed.

They also demanded that a death sentence be pronounced for sex offenders.

The President of the students’ union, Danielson Akpan, spoke with Channels Television during the protest demanding justice for their late colleague.

The lawmaker representing Ovia Federal Constituency, Dennis Idahosa, who also joined the students in the solidarity march vowed that he would move a motion to support capital punishment at the floor of the house.

Meanwhile, the new Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Johnson Kokumo had earlier on Wednesday promised that efforts would not be spared in ensuring that the culprits involved in the circumstances that led to Uwaila’s death are apprehended and made to face the law.

Kokumo made the promise when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased.

Uwa, a 22-year-old student of UNIBEN was reported to have been raped inside a church where she went to read at the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the Edo State Capital.

The hoodlums were reported to have struck her in the head with a fire extinguisher after raping her and left her for dead. She was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where she later died.

The news of her death has continued to spark outrage with trends on social demanding justice and an end to rape.

#JusticeForUwa: New Edo CP Condoles With Family, Vows To Arrest Culprits

The new Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Johnson Kokumo has promised that efforts would not be spared in ensuring that the culprits involved in the circumstances that led to Uwaila Omozuwa’s death are apprehended and made to face the law.

Kokumo made the promise when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased Uniben student at their home in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the Commissioner noted that the perpetrators of the heinous crime will not escape justice.

“The Nigeria Police Force will leave no stone unturned to ensure that we arrest the perpetrators. They cannot just escape from justice.

“We will round them up all; I am giving you that assurance. So sorry, may God almighty give you and of course members of your family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.

The father of the deceased thanked the police for the efforts in ensuring that justice is served.
