A former commandant of the college and deputy governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral John Jonah (Rtd), told a gathering of military officers in Abuja on Monday that the military must also resolve to work with all Nigerians and security agencies in order to sustain national security and create an environment that would bring about the country’s development.
The National Defence College has witnessed, on several occasions, a gathering of military personnel discussing issues relating to security in Nigeria.
The personnel at the occasion held discussions aimed at putting forward suggestions on how the Nigerian military can continue to provide leadership and service to the nation, 15 years after its return to civil rule.
Such discussion has become necessary in the face of increasing insecurity in the north east.
For the deputy governor of Bayelsa State, tackling insecurity starts with a reform of the Nigerian security sector.
It does not stop there however, giving the increasing need for its participation in internal security management, Rear Admiral Jonah, believes the military needs to continue to improve on its partnership with both security and non-security agencies to rid the nation of terrorism.
The consensus at the gathering is that, while the military plays its role the civilian authority needs to make provision for all the military’s needs to perform its functions.
