Nasarawa State, UNICEFNasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura has signed a commitment with the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to improve the health sector in the state promising to stick to the conditions of the commitment.

Governor Tanko Al-Makura, members of the state executive council and others critical stakeholders in the state gathered to witness the signing of the state government and UNICEF work plan.

The Governor gave the assurance that the state is fully committed to actualising the vision of the UNICEF especially in the health sector.

Representative of the UNICEF, Uptal Moitra, explained the rationale of the commitment to the officials, saying that it is part of their efforts to key into the plan of the state government as evident in some states of the country.

He said that the UNICEF has donated 158 million intervention fund to the State Government and it is expected to pay 50% counterpart fund to kickstart the work plan.

The Governor also received officials of UNESCO, who came to seek for support from him for the sustainability of the state agency for adult and non-formal education.

They asked the Government to release some percentage of the State Universal Basic Education Board allocation to help run the agency effectively in order to achieve a desired percentage of literacy level in the state.

Al-Markura, in reaction promised to grant their request in elevating adult and non-formal education in the country.

The Governor was also presented with an award given to him by the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria at their tenth triennial delegates’ conference as one of the labour friendly governors.
