Nigerian graduates have been urged to discover how to add value to their lives and an organisation by making sure they acquire additional knowledge and skill after school.

Brian Oji of Aiki Nigeria, and the founder of FORA, Iyinola Aboyeji, on Channels Television’s programme ‘Rubbin Minds’ stressed that the education system in Nigeria had left many graduates lacking in necessary skills that could earn them a job.

Oji, on Sunday, said that quite a number of Nigerian graduates do not know what to do with their education qualification and that the development was as a result of the fact that they had not been able to discover how to add value to an organisation they intend to work with.

He stressed the need for graduates lacking necessary skills to take advantage of materials made available on the internet, citing the website of Akiri as one of such internet websites that share information that add value to the lives of graduates.

“We are training job seekers to know what to do to get the needed job.

“There is need for youths to begin to develop themselves in order to be equipped with the necessary skills needed in getting jobs,” he said.

On the March 15 recruitment exercise of the Nigeria Immigration Service that led to the death of some applicants, Aboyeji said he would not blame the applicants, insisting that some Nigerian graduates are not ready for a job.

“So many are not thinking about why they are seeking for a job in the first place. They do not think of what value they can add to the organisation if they get the job.  They just want to work and earn money.

“Nigerian youths are not well equipped and you find out that when you employ them you begin to train them on things they should ordinarily have known,” Aboyeji said.

He called for the reformation of the education system and also advised parents to inculcate in their children the right attitude that would enable them add needed value to an organisation.

Both Aboyeji and Oji stressed that as much as agriculture had the potential of creating jobs, it would have the same challenge that other sectors are having as those that would be involved in the agriculture sector are still not adequately equipped with necessary skills and knowledge.
