The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Rivers State chapter has raised alarmed over the rising spate of robbery and kidnap incidents in the State.

The party said “the resurgence of these criminal activities according to a statement issued and signed by the Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam on behalf of the party has further cast doubt on the capability of the security operatives in the State to protect lives and property despite huge amounts of money being spent on security vote.

In the last few weeks the party regrets, the State has witnessed unprecedented occurrence of bank robberies, kidnapping and maiming of lives of innocent Nigerians in full public glare without the least resistance from the security operatives, the statement further observed.

Not even the villages and communities and the coastal waters are safe as piracy and cult activities are also reportedly on the increase with their attendant threats to human lives and properties. read the statement

While condemning the re-occurring robbery incidents in various parts of the State, the ACN is calling on government and the relevant agencies to rise up to the task and reassure the traumatized Rivers populace of their safety in their homes and places of work.

One sure way of doing this, the ACN Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam noted, is for the security operatives to re-sharpen their skills in intelligence gathering, re-organise all Police Area Commands and divisions to guarantee effective policing as well as commence the mopping up of unauthorized arms and ammunition in the hands of wrong people.

“There is also the need to re-assign police chiefs and directors of other security agencies who have served for over three years in a particular area to avoid compromise of standards through closer acquaintances etc”, the ACN advised.

The party however frowned at the seeming politicizing of an issue as serious as security by government as experience has shown that certain persons implicated in breakdown of law and order and criminal activities are at times treated with kids’ gloves, and urged the State government to also justify the huge state resources being spent on security vote.

On the part of the criminals, the ACN urged them to desist from the dastardly act of wasting the lives of innocent people in their quest for material things.
