The Kogi State governor, Captain Idris Wada

The election petition tribunal in Kogi state, has upheld the election of Captain Idris Wada and his deputy Yomi Awoniyi as the elected governor and deputy governor of the state.

Reading the  judgement that lasted for two hours, chairman of the tribunal Justice Abudulahi Ambusa, ruled that the petitioner, Abubakar Audu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), failed woefully to prove his petition beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge also ruled that the criminal allegations in the petition were not proven.

Justice Ambusa also stated that many evidences and witnesses from the petitioner were struck out as the result of cross extermination which rendered them conflicting and inconsequential.

The tribunal chairman therefore dismissed the petition, stating that the first respondent, Captain Idris Wada scored majority of the lawful votes cast.

The judge noted that the petitioner failed to prove otherwise and therefore declared the governor as duly elected.

Captain Wada of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner of the December 3, governorship election in the state.

The state chapter of the  ACN petitioned the  Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that the result of the  election, declared in favour of the PDP did not reflect the actual position of the electorate.
