The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke has warned lawyers in the country to stop their unwarranted attacks on Judges in the country.
Speaking at the 2012/2013 Legal year of the Federal Capital Territory’s High Court, the Minister condemned some lawyers for launching unprovoked attacks against some Judges whenever they lose cases.
He said that the action of the erring lawyers was painful, embarrassing and uncalled for because it was against the ethic of law profession.
Mr Adoke said: “Judgments are criticized to the glee of the press even before the reasoning of the court is read and understood. In fact, it is safe to conclude that it has become fashionable for some lawyers to label any Judges they disagree with as Corrupt”.
He added that while one is not condoning the activities of a few bad eggs in the judiciary, it is “necessary to eschew these vices that have unfortunately crept into the profession in order to restore the dignity of the profession and respect for judges”.
In the same vain, the Minister asked Judges to show mutual respect to lawyers warning that Judges must resist the temptation of conducting court proceedings in an oppressive and intimidating manner.
He also deplored the threats being faced by the Judges and their families on account of their judicial functions and assured that government would take decisive actions to protect the Judges.
