Nasarawa state government has denied misappropriating the N400million flood relief fund collected from the federal government last year.
The state Commissioner for Information, Hamza Eayo told a news conference in Lafia, the state capital that over N340million of the fund is still in the state treasury as he explained reasons for the delay in relocating flood victims since October 2012.
He said the delay was due to the need to assess the affected communities by the committee set by the government and that the state government was also facing problems of community relations.
The Commissioner however said part of the fund was used to provide relief to victims of the flood disaster in the state, while the balance will be used to relocate them from the affected areas.
Meanwhile the state Governor Tanko al-Makura has called on residents of the state to stop building along flood plains ahead of this year’s heavy rain.
The governor made the call while on sensitization of residents and inspection drainages to prevent flooding in the state
Nasarawa state is one of the states affected by flooding in 2012 due to the state’s topography which is surrounded by hills.
