The Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, Gambo Sallau, has resigned his position in the 40-man assembly.

In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the speaker said that his resignation was sequel to the mass defection of PDP lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Monday.

Honourable Sallau said that since defecting to the opposition party contradicts his principles, he remains a member of the PDP.

His resignation comes a day after 27 out of 31 People’s Democratic Party, PDP members in Kano State House of Assembly defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

At the plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker, Isyaku Ali Danja, on Monday, the defected lawmakers presented a letter to that effect, which contained their names and constituencies, to formally confirm their defection to the APC.

They said that the decision was taken following consultations with their constituents on whether or not to support Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who has joined the party in December 2013.
