Suspected Terrorists Denied Bail

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has refused to admit a lecturer of the Kogi State University, Dr. Nazeef Yunus and two others who are currently standing trial for allegedly being members of the Boko Haram sect in Kogi State to bail.

Dr. Nazeef Yunus, an assistant lecturer in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Kogi State University, Lokoja, alongside Umar Musa and Salami Abdullahi were arraigned before the court over their alleged involvement in terrorism activities.

The accused persons had through their various counsels argued their bail application before the court.

Ruling on the bail application, the trial judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole refused the bail application of the accused persons saying it was the duty of the court to assist the state law enforcement agents in their coercive action against terrorism, while being mindful of the fundamental human rights of the accused.

The court further held that no reasonable court or tribunal would do otherwise, especially against the backdrop of insurgency in the North East, particularly in the last four to six weeks.

Justice Kolawole, instead ruled that there would be an accelerated trial of the accused persons and ordered that they be remanded in Kuje Prison pending the commencement of their trial on March 18 and 19.
