Ismael-IgbaniThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria is reviewing its gender policy to accommodate more women participation in politics and public administration across the country.

The electoral commission held a technical meeting with civil society organisations and interest groups in Lagos on Monday to look at the blue print that would guide everyone on how to go about equity in gender related matters

The review is coming ahead of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria currently having a 35 per cent affirmative action for women participation in politics.

Women have not fully taken advantage of the provision, a situation that the review of the gender policy is looking to address, but the government had expressed its resolve to involve women more in administration.

A National Commissioner of the INEC, Ismael Igbani,  stressed that the policy would improve the lot of women in whatever activities men participate in.

“We have seen that there is a preponderance of men in the executive positions of parties  and we will be monitoring their conventions and primaries to make sure that women are equitably represented. What we are doing now will affect in 2015 and years to come.

The representation of women in Nigeria government falls short of the national Gender Policy.
