ogunyeA Lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, has said the procedure followed in the impeachment of the Adamawa State governor; Murtala Nyako, was rushed but is in accordance to the law.

While giving his opinion on the impeachment of the governor by the state’s lawmakers, Mr Ogunye said that the procedure was in line with the letters of the constitution, citing section 188 of the constitution.

“Given what the letters of the law say, what they’ve done appears to be in accordance with what the law says they should do,” he told Channels Television on Wednesday.

Mr Ogunye pointed out that the governor of the state was fully aware of the allegations made against him, recalling that there had been previous attempt to impeach him.

The Legal Practitioner noted that the use of impeachment on a sitting governor has become a political persecution.

Giving a background of the happenings in the state, Mr Ogunye explained that the impeached governor of the state, Governor Nyako was elected in 2007 and that during the tenure of the late President Umaru Yar’adua, the governor was served an impeachment letter before the late President intervened.

He also emphasised  that in 2010, the Adamawa people commended the governor for the efforts he made in the state calling him the “Messiah of the state”.

He referred to the recent crisis happening in the state as an “inter party scrabble, stating that the governor’s defection to the All Progressives Congress from the Peoples’ Democratic Party had created more issues in the state.

He further insisted that the impeachment procedure was rushed and noted that the decision to go to court was left to the impeached governor to decide.
