The “Leave Al-Makura Alone” protest by indigenes of Nasarawa state, has entered day 2, with Lafia the state capital completely shut down to traffic.

Thousands of protesters took to the high ways and streets across the state yesterday, July 16, demanding state Lawmakers to discontinue the impeachment proceedings against the state governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.

The protest continued on Tuesday morning, as protesters have gone to register their complains which they plan to take to the Assembly Complex at Diamond Bank along Doma Road through the Emir’s Palace.

Another set of protest has also been going on in Keana Local Government Area.

The Nasarawa State Assembly had directed that Mr Al-Makura would be served notice of impeachment for alleged gross misconduct.

According to the Nasarawa Police Spokesperson, Mr Ismaila Numan, the command had increased security in major towns following the protest and also dispersed the youths before the protests could get out of control in all the affected towns.

He said that no life or property was lost and that police officers had been deployed to strategic locations to forestall any breach of the peace. Despite the protests, the State House of Assembly has served the impeachment notice on the Governor through a substituted service.

The State lawmakers are accusing the Governor of misconduct and misappropriation of funds and the notice, which was signed by 20 lawmakers, was published in the newspapers.
