al-makuraThe Commissioner for Information in Nasarawa State, Hamza Mohammed, has said that one of the reasons the Governor of the state, Tanko Al-Makura, appeared before the panel despite not being served an impeachment letter was to save his reputation and for the panel to hear his defenses.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, the Commissioner blamed the crisis in the leadership of the state on the relationship between the Governor and the State House of Assembly, which has not been smooth.

“We have not been having it smooth since the Governor’s resumption of office, we have been having running battles with them,” he said.

The Commissioner stated that the Governor could go ahead and challenge some of the illegal processes that went through during the procedures, claiming that as shown in Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, some recommendations have been breached by the State House of Assembly.

He also noted that the State House of Assembly were not taking orders from the court, adding that frivolous laws have been made such as the one year tenure for Local Government Council Chairmen, passage of resolutions asking the Governor to seek permission from them before he travels abroad, and asking a Radio DJ to appear before them, amongst others.

He also stated that once a report is submitted to the House of Assembly that the Governor is not guilty, further actions would not be taken.

He added that the House of Assembly cannot question the resolutions passed by the panel but if it did, they would go to court to seek an interpretation of the panel’s resolution and only the court can determine if the action conforms with the Constitution.
