An Agricultural Economist at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Prof. Bola Okuneye, has defined food security as a way of providing adequate food when necessary and of high quality.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Business Morning, Prof. Okuneye stated that land cultivation has not been properly done in Nigeria, adding that out of the cultivatable land that the country has, only 39-40% has been used.
He also noted that the issue of land tenure would also be key because in the South-West, East and South-South regions of the country, there is rigidity in terms of land.
He said that distribution of silos was not the ultimate but that it should be distributed in all the geo-political zones to help during the dry season.
He advised that the government should have complementary programmes or policies that would allow proper agricultural mechanisation to take place.
