EFCCA legal practitioner, Idris Faro, believes that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, would be more efficient with the change of leadership effected by President Buhari on Monday.

Mr Faro was the guest of Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday and he lauded the decision to sack former EFCC boss, Ibrahim Lamorde, and replacing him with Mr Ibrahim Mustapha Magu.

“We need to have fresh blood in the fight against corruption. There are competent people who can lead the EFCC, we don’t need to continue with old hands, especially those whose characters are tainted one way or the other,” he said.

He advised that with the entry of a new leadership, the EFCC and other security agencies like the Police would need to improve their investigative capabilities as this has been a major challenge to the efforts to fight crime in the country.

“There is absolute need for the agencies to retrain their operatives and change their style of investigation because if investigation is not credible or good the case will be bungled at the end of the day and corruption will continue.”

He disagreed with the idea of the EFCC being led by a prosecutor and not necessarily an ex-police officer, saying policemen are trained in the art of prosecution and the EFCC also already has lawyers who are prosecutors.

He insisted that what the anti-graft agency needs is to retrain its operatives.

Mr Faro also shared his views on the

governorship election petition tribunal verdict.

He said, “The decision of the tribunal in the election petition in Taraba is sound, it is valid and it is in consonance with law. It is a plus for Nigerian women and I heartily welcome the decision.

“It is good because it represents the aspirations and wishes of the ordinary Tarabans. It aims at preaching legality – things must be done in accordance with law and nothing else.”
