Terror Attacks On Germany Are Wake-Up Call — Buhari

Buhari on polioPresident Muhammadu Buhari has given an assurance that the Federal Government will continue to provide strong oversight function and funding for polio programmes in Nigeria.

To this effect, the President is reconstituting an expanded presidential task force on polio which would include the 36 states’ governors to sustain the success currently recorded.

President Buhari spoke at the signing of the updated Abuja commitment on polio eradication in the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.

The event attracted the Chairmen of the Bill Gates Foundation as well as the Chairman of Dangote Group, who are all partners with the Federal Government in the effort to eradicate polio in the country.

Some northern state governments in Nigeria had earlier signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bill Gates and Dangote Foundations, to strengthen routine immunisation in the region.

The partnership is aimed at eradicating polio cases and other child killer diseases in Northern Nigeria and other States.

The World Health Organization in September 2015, removed Nigeria from the list of polio endemic nations in the world.

This is the first time that Nigeria has interrupted transmission of wild poliovirus, bringing the country and the African region closer than ever to being certified polio-free.

Efforts that the government is making are geared towards sustaining the feat and ensuring that there would be no new cases of polio in the nation.
