SON in BenueThe Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has convened a food and agro-allied products sensitisation workshop for Benue State farmers and small scale business on global best practices.

This is coming after foods exported from Nigeria have been rejected by the European Union.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday, the acting Director-General of SON, Mr Paul Angya, advised that Nigerian farmers must improve on food processing and packaging, to curb the practice of yams harvested in Nigeria being certified in Ghana before export to global markets.

He said that Nigeria had acquired the technology to certify ‘made in Nigeria’ products as a way of addressing the European Union rejection of produce from Nigeria.

To achieve the objective and to enable farmers meet Nigeria’s food demand, the Ter Makurdi, Chief Sule Abenga, and the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who was represented by Mr Tersoo Kpelai, urged the Federal Government to immediately halt the war being waged on nine local council areas of the state by herdsmen.

One of the small scale business owners who produces yam flour, Michel Shongu, showcased some of his products.
