Nyesom-Wike-Governor-of-Rivers-StateThe All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as ‘baseless and unfortunate’ the fresh allegations raised by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, against the police and the party over attempts to rig the December 10 legislative re-run election.

In a statement by the spokesman for the party in Rivers State, Chris Finebone, the party described the threat of the governor to make public the visuals of the alleged meeting as ‘cowardly blackmail’ and wondered why the governor would delay in the presentation of the said incriminating evidence.

The party described the governor’s recent outburst as expressions of frustrations which it said was due to the loss of his grip on moles in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the justice system.

The statement says Governor Wike has “resorted to cheap blackmail to try to continue to portray himself as an electoral strongman having been stripped of the false garment in recent times”.

Describing the Governor as a proverbial masquerade that has lost his entire arrows, the party said Mr Wike was cutting a pitiable image of a disarmed dictator.

“Fact is that Governor wike has never embarked on any election without buying over the police and the rest of the security agencies.

“He has also not engaged in any election without taking firm control of the election umpire and the judiciary. The height of this malfeasance was in the 2015 elections when he introduced another factor – the use of ex-militants and hoodlums who killed and maimed for him while Gesila Khan’s INEC wrote election results with Wike’s men across Rivers State.

“However, as the rerun elections approach, it seems to be dawning on the governor that times have changed as the security agencies including the Nigeria police are way beyond his corrupting reach,” the statement further read.

The opposition party in the state further claimed that Governor Wike was “merely flying a red herring to divert attention from his dubious electoral schemes. No one is fooled at all”.

The APC further urged Governor Wike to immediately desist from what it called “present free-for-all blackmailing of critical stakeholders in the December 10 re-run elections.

Governor Wike had, while addressing a crowd of supporters during the flag off of the reconstruction of the General Hospitals in Akuku Toru and Asari Toru Local Government Areas, said that he was in possession of visuals of a said meeting between the police and politicians plotting to rig the December 10 election in the state.

Mr Wike said that the video contained plan on the methods to be adopted for the planned rigging of the re-run elections.

He also claimed that 600 policemen working with the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state had already been distributed by the Police Commissioner to prominent leaders of the APC on a local government basis for the indiscriminate arrests of the Peoples Democratic Party’s supporters few days to the election.
