The Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening the health sector, as he inspects the Medical College Complex of the Yobe State University.

Established as part of the administration’s effort to develop and enhance human resource for health, the College is also to support the newly established Yobe University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH), Damaturu.

The Governor was conducted round the Medical College Complex by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Yakubu Mukhtar and the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Barrister Ado Isyaku.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work at the site but asked the contractors to speed up work to meet the six months’ dateline as content in terms of the contract.

“Despite my appreciating the quality of work, I urge you strongly to speed up work to ensure you beat the stipulated dateline.

“You need to put in a lot of men and resources to meet up the dateline and make this complex ready for the resumption of new medical students who will be admitted from the next academic session beginning in September, this year.” Governor Gaidam said.

Answering questions from newsmen after the inspection, Governor Gaidam recapped that the Yobe State government under his leadership accord healthcare services a high priority.

“This administration accords utmost priority to the health care services, this is why we are making huge investments in the sector.

“This is why we establishing a Medical College here in our state university and a Teaching Hospital apart from the reconstruction works going on across major hospitals in Potiskum, Gashua, Geidam and Damaturu, the state capital.”

Gaidam also disclosed that 17 medical doctors have been recruited from the Republic of Egypt as “efforts are been done to bring quality medical services to the doorsteps of our people”

Governor Gaidam also revealed that the Yobe State government is currently sponsoring over 400 medical students of Yobe origin within and outside the country all with the aim of bringing quality healthcare closer to the people.

In his remark, the Vice Chancellor of the university commended the Governor for his resilience in ensuring the growth and development of the institution and assures him that he will continue to implement policies that will speed development.

He identified additional structures that would need to be provided within the complex to make the Medical College fully accommodate the needs of a modern medical institution.

The Medical College Complex under construction comprises of academic and non-academic offices, classrooms as well as lecture theatres and laboratories.

Others include; departments of human anatomy, physiology and microbiology among others.
