The Coroner Inquest into the death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke has ruled that drug overdose was responsible his death.

The Coroner, Olusegun Ayilara, in his ruling on Tuesday said that the autopsy and toxicology reports showed there were no traces of poison in Adeleke’s body when he died on April 23, 2017.

“The high dose of sedatives and analgesics with the mode of administration caused aspiration which culminated in death,” the coroner said.

In the course of the inquest, which was instituted by Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, the inquest heard from several witnesses, including Mr. Alfred Aderibigbe, who treated the Senator the morning he died.

Members of the late Senator’s family, however, shunned the summons of the coroner, describing the inquest as a kangaroo inquest.

They also accused the Chief Medical Director of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Professor Akeem Lasisi, of refusing to give them a copy of the autopsy and toxicology report.

Others that appeared before the inquest include the Osun Deputy Governor, the pathologist, who carried out the autopsy, Dr Taiwo Solaja.

Senator Adeleke’s death had sparked violent protests by his supporters with allegations that he was poisoned emerging in the days after his death.

The protests and suspicion of foul play by his family led the state government to set up the inquest.
