A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the central Philippines on Thursday (July 6), killing at least one person, according to local authorities.

Local Congresswoman Lucy Torres said the person was killed when an apartment complex in Leyte province collapsed during the quake, which hit at a depth of 41 km (26 miles) about 580 km (360 miles) southwest of the capital, Manila.

Photographs from residents in the province’s Kananga village showed vehicles damaged by the collapsed building.

Disaster officials have yet to report on the total damage.
