Brazilians on Thursday woke up to news that the lower house of Congress had voted on Wednesday to reject a corruption charge against President Michel Temer for allegedly taking bribes.

The vote saved Temer from facing a possible Supreme Court trial that could have ousted him from office. Temer won enough ballots to keep the opposition from gaining the two-thirds of the vote required to move the corruption case forward to the top court.

The strong show of support for Temer raised the prospects that he can now move ahead with reform of Brazil’s pension system crucial to plugging a wide budget deficit and reviving investor confidence in an economy emerging from recession. Following the vote, Temer said it was “urgent to put the country on the path of growth, of job creation, of modernization, and of social justice.”

But Temer is widely expected to face more corruption charges in the coming weeks, which could again put his presidency in jeopardy.

Many Brazilians say they are unhappy with the direction of the country and the recent vote saving Temer from prosecution.

Brazilian newspaper vendor, Marcelo Bras, said, “I think the country needs more seriousness, it needs more honest people, so we can change this scene and construct a better country.” And tourist agent, Luis Antonio, said, “the way things are, I think everything is getting worse.”
