Youths and drivers in Benin City, the Edo state capital, on Tuesday, protested the alleged killing of a taxi driver by a police officer over his refusal to give bribe.

According to eyewitnesses, the police officer pushed the driver into an oncoming truck after he failed to give them more than N100 as bribe at a checkpoint.

“I was driving by when I saw my friend David standing and begging the police officers to collect just 200-Naira because he was not working but only taking his wife somewhere but the officer, Inspector Adebisi refused to collect it saying he should bring N500, as the argument continued, the officer then pushed David into an oncoming truck that killed him,” an eyewitness said.

Another eyewitness Kelly Osas said the officers on seeing the result of their action jumped into their vehicle and escaped.

“As soon as they saw that he was dead they entered their vehicle and drove off, we chased them but couldn’t meet up,” he told Channels Television.

Meanwhile, the Edo state commissioner of Police Johnson Kokumo has given an assurance that the alleged killer cops will be investigated and punished if found culpable.

“I have ordered the arrest of the officers involved. What I can assure everyone is that the investigation is on and we will not rest on our oars until justice is served”.
