The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented the Certificate of Return to the winner of the just concluded Obudu State Constituency bye-election in Cross River State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Frankland Briyai, presented the certificate to Mrs Abbey Ukpukpen at the INEC Headquarters in Calabar, the state Capital.

He urged her to exhibit a high sense of responsibility in the discharge of her duties while in office and uphold the confidence reposed in her by the electorate.

The REC also used the opportunity of the event to remind all stakeholders present and the people of Cross River that the electoral umpire has extended the period of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

He urged them to mobilise those who have yet to register to take advantage of the extension and do so in order to participate in the coming general elections.

In her response, the new member of the Cross River State House of Assembly thanked the PDP and her constituents for their support and assured them of effective representation.

Mrs Ukpukpen contested the bye-election held on Saturday last week on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

She was declared the winner of the poll after scoring 12,712 votes to defeat her opponent from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adah Ishamali, with 4,345 votes.

The lawmaker is the widow of Mr Steven Ukpukpen, whose death led to the declaration of the seat vacant.
