The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are at variance with each other over the recent attack in Agatu Local Council Area of Benue State that left several people dead.

While the APC House of Representatives’ candidate for the Makurdi/Guma Federal constituency, Mr Terhide Utaan blamed Governor Samuel Ortom for the attack, the state government’s spokesman, Terver Akase, on the other hand, accused the opposition party of the violence.

Both men made their position known on Thursday while addressing journalists in Makurdi, the state capital two days to the general elections.

“I want to put it to you on good authority that going by witness testimonies, we are convinced that the people who carried out the attack on Iye Council ward are members of the Livestock Guard being sponsored by the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom.

“It is quite unfounded, it is quite ridiculous to imagine that Fulani herdsmen will leave the boundary town of Pakina and come and then come and attack which is right inside the intern land,” he stated.

But reacting to the allegation, Governor Ortom’s aide said the state government cannot enact an anti-grazing law to kill its innocent citizens.

“What you heard the candidate there (Utaan) say is all as a result of the fear of defeat that is making them say that. Governor Samuel Ortom has left no one in doubt regarding his ability, commitment, determination to end the killings.

“And to put a permanent stop to the frequent harassments, to the frequent attacks on Benue people by the Fulani herdsmen that have been invading our communities over the years to attack innocent people and kill them, including children.

“This governor brought about a lasting solution to this problem by enacting a law by not only protecting the farmers but also protect herdsmen. Now, the same governor cannot arm a militia,” he stated.
