A security expert, Colonel Yomi Dare (retired) has called on security agencies to work together and gather intelligence in addressing the spate of killings and other security threats in several parts of the country.

While appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he said community policing is a long term approach in addressing the security challenges, stressing that the government must not trivialise the issue.

“All the security agencies bearing arms must synergise, work together. The customs, immigration (etc) must work together to face security because we have a very serious issue at hand. And also on intelligence gathering,” he stated.

Dare also attributed the high wave of crimes in the country on the alleged politicizing of security matters.

Meanwhile, a Professor of Criminal Justice System and penology, Professor Ussiju Medaner, called on the Federal Government to effectively fund the Nigeria Police Force.

He believes that an improvement in the welfare of the police personnel would help address the security challenges.

“We have almost 7,000 police formations in Nigeria. I think in 2015 budget, we had about N20 billion allocated to the police, only N9 billion was released and N114 million for the running of the police stations.

“If you sub-divide that money, you will have N4,000 to each police station. Now we have to digitalise our police system because we have gone into smart policing,” he stated.

Both remarks come in the wakes of attacks by suspected bandits in Zamfara State that have led to the loss of several lives.

Following the development, the Federal Government was forced to suspend mining activities in the state until further notice.

Announcing the suspension at a press conference in Abuja, the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu said that all foreigners on mining sites have been asked to vacate their locations or risk their losing licenses.
