Manchester City left-back, Benjamin Mendy, has been suspended by the club after he was charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on Thursday.
According to the Cheshire Police, the incidents were alleged to have occurred between October 2020 and August 2021 after three complainants over the age of 16 reported the case.
The Constabulary was quick to sound a note of warning “It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice ongoing proceedings.
In a statement, the Premier League Champions confirmed the sanction on the France international: “Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.
“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is, therefore, unable to make further comment until that process is complete,” the statement further read.
Mendy, who was part of France’s 2018 World Cup winning squad, has been remanded in custody ahead of an appearance at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Friday
The left-back joined City in 2017 from Monaco for a reported £52 million ($71 million), but has been plagued by injuries that have limited his playing time,
