‘Recipe For Destruction,’ Olamiju Alao-Akala Worried Over Planned ‘Leaderless’ Protest

The lawmaker acknowledged that people were really hungry, expressing his willingness to participate in the planned demonstration.

Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala represents the Ogbomoso North/Ogbomoso South/Oriire federal constituency of Oyo State.

The lawmaker representing the Ogbomoso North/Ogbomoso South/Oriire federal constituency, Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, has described the planned nationwide protest as a recipe for disaster.

Some Nigerians have declared August 1 to August 10 for the ‘EndBadGovernance protest against the rising cost of living and poverty among other things.

The situation has necessitated President Bola Tinubu, state governors, security agencies, and traditional rulers to hold a series of meetings, calling for the cancellation of the protest for fear of being hijacked by hoodlums.

The lawmaker, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Hard Copy on Friday, said every good protest seeks to proffer a solution to an identified issue on the ground.

“Protest is a healthy thing but this protest, there is no face to it,” he said. “But who is calling it? That is a recipe for destruction, it is faceless. At the end of the day, if anything happens, who are we going to hold responsible?”

‘Really Hungry’

During the show, the lawmaker acknowledged that people were really hungry, expressing his willingness to participate in the planned demonstration.

But he questioned the agenda and motive of the protest, saying the word, ‘bad governance’ as ascribed to the faceless sponsors of the demonstration is too vague.

He explained that some non-state actors could take advantage of the protest and commit crimes during the nine days.

“I welcome protest and even want to join them in the protest. Are people not hungry? People are really hungry but what are we protesting for?

“Is it bad governance? Bad governance is too vague. A lot of scrupulous elements could use that as an avenue to loot and do bad things and we don’t want that.”
