An incident claimed the life of Kabiru Musa, a nine-year-old boy from Marayan Gawo Idonduna village in Jigawa State, on August 27, 2024.

The tragedy occurred at a pond located approximately 500 meters from his community.

Kabiru had been sent by his parents to cut grass for their livestock when he ventured near the pond.

At around 4:50 p.m., he slipped and fell into the water, where he tragically drowned. Despite immediate efforts by local divers and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kabiru was found dead.

The distress call came from Ibrahim Sulaiman, District Head of Kadowawa, who informed DSC Sani Yusif, Divisional Officer of Jahun LGA.

The NSCDC’s Divisional Disaster Management team, along with local divers, launched a search and rescue operation, but Kabiru’s life could not be saved.

NSCDC State Commandant, Muhammad Danjuma, expressed his condolences, saying, “We deeply sympathise with the family and the community for this heartbreaking loss. This incident serves as a reminder to parents to closely supervise their children and avoid sending them on such errands, especially during this season when water bodies are dangerously full.”

The boy’s remains have been returned to his family for burial. The community is left to mourn the young life lost too soon.
