The father of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, Joseph Aloba, has called for a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his son’s death, nearly three years after the incident.
Mr Aloba is urging the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to take over the case from the Lagos State Police Command, insisting that only an independent, centralised probe can ensure a diligent and unbiased outcome.
As part of his demands, he called on the police to invite Mohbad’s wife, Omowunmi, and his younger brother, Adura, to provide further clarity on the singer’s final moments.
He also raised concerns over the handling of evidence, particularly rejecting earlier legal advice that cleared some prime suspects. According to him, a comprehensive forensic analysis of the late singer’s phone records is necessary to uncover new leads.
The issue of a DNA test involving Mohbad’s son, Liam, has also resurfaced, with Mr Aloba’s legal team questioning the credibility of the facility used for the test and calling for proper verification.
Meanwhile, the legal battle surrounding the case continues.
A Federal High Court in Abuja recently granted an application by the Break the Silence Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, to seek an order of mandamus compelling the police authorities to reinvestigate the matter and invite individuals who were last seen with the deceased.
This comes despite the findings of a coroner’s inquest delivered in July 2025, which attributed the singer’s death to medical negligence by an auxiliary nurse.
Mr Aloba has, however, filed appeals challenging the decision of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, which discharged several individuals previously linked to the case, including Naira Marley and Sam Larry.
Mohbad’s remains are yet to be reburied, as disputes over autopsy findings and the paternity test continue to delay closure for the family.
The rapper died on September 12, 2023, at age 27, under controversial circumstances.
His body was later exhumed for an autopsy, but officials said the exact cause of death could not be determined due to decomposition.
His death triggered widespread outrage and the #Justice4MohBad movement, fueled by allegations of bullying and abuse linked to his former record label, Marlian Music.
