Prosecute Abductors Of Ese, Rights Commission Urges Police

Ese-OruruThe National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase, to ensure that all those involved in the abduction of Ese Oruru, are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Exchanging views with the IGP in Abuja on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Professor Bem Angwe, commended the IGP, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II and all other Nigerians, who rallied support towards the release of the 14-year old girl.

The Executive Secretary, who was represented at the occasion by the Senior Special Assistant, Mr Lambert Oparah, condemned in strong terms, the abduction of Ese, stressing that the action was highly reprehensible and contravened Section 21 of the Child’s Rights Act.

Mr Angwe said that the Commission would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the prosecution of those involved in the dastardly act, warning that “the Commission is determined to end incessant child abuse”.

On the request of the Executive Secretary about the protection of the girl, the IGP in his response, assured the NHRC that the abductor and all other actors in the abduction saga would be brought to deserved justice.

According to the IGP, an in-house administrative inquiry had already been set up to deal with the professional conduct of officers involved in the initial investigation of the case stressing that those indicted would be dealt with accordingly.

While talking on adequate protection of the victim, the IGP assured the Commission and all Nigerians that the privacy and the protective rights of the girl-child would be guaranteed.

Ese was allegedly abducted in August 2015 and moved to Kano for forced marriage.

She was freed on Monday night, following a directive by the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Mohammed Katsina.

Police To Reunite Ese With Family After Medical And Psychological Checks

Ese-Oruru-in-AbujaThe Spokesperson of the Nigerian Police, Bisi Kolawole said the abducted 14-year old, Ese Oruru, is currently in police custody and in the Gender and Child Care Protection Unit.

The Force PRO added that Ese is undergoing medical and psychological check-up after which she will be reunited with her parents today.

The Force PRO in a short speech read to the media also said an in-house investigation has been launched by the Inspector General of Police to vet the involvement of the Nigerian Police during the abduction period.

She said the abductor, Yunusa Dahiru, who is in police custody, and all other actors in the abduction will be brought to justice.

Ese’s mother, Rose Oruru, also at the briefing expressed her joy at the reunion with her daughter.

Both Ese and her mother, are billed to meet with the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, today.

They are billed for a 5PM flight from Abuja to Port Harcourt, en route Bayelsa State.

The Force PRO had yesterday told anxious journalists, who waited for several hours at the Police Headquarters in Abuja, that the inability of Ese’s parents to arrive on time led to the postponement of the exercise.

Ese was allegedly abducted eight months ago and moved to Kano for forced marriage.

Police Kill Robbers In Shootout In Oyo

police-on suspectsThe Oyo State Police Command has uncovered the hide out of notorious robbers who have been terrorising Oyo and Ogbomosho axis of the state by looting, raping and killing residents.

The discovery led to a shootout between the gang of robbers and the police, with the police killing one of the robbers while two others sustained serious gun injury.

The Oyo State Police Command, Mohammed Katsina, said the command had been trailing the gang since May, when they robbed a household of their valuables and raped the women in the house.

While describing the latest feat as a significant one, Mr Katsina added that the command would not rest until the path of decency and lawful conduct was entrenched within the state and adjoining environs.

Mr Katsina expressed gratitude for support of members of the public and also gave assurances that the war on crime would continue.

CheckpointsThe Oyo State Police Command has warned members of the public to be more vigilant while boarding public vehicles so as not to fall prey to kidnappers who disguise as cab drivers within the metropolis.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, who made this known at a press parade in Ibadan disclosed that some taxi drivers now pretend to be cab drivers and kidnap unsuspecting passengers in the process.

Mr Katsina added that some gang of armed robbers were caught while disguising as bridal convoy after snatching exotic cars at gun point.

The Police boss added that some fake soldiers and Police who have been terrorising Oyo and Ogbomosho environs were also caught after a tip off.

Parading various sets of criminal at the State Headquarters in Eleyele, the Commissioner of Police told the press  that despite the fact that criminals are getting smarter by the day, the command has devised means of catching them in the act, no matter how sophisticated.

The Commissioner said that he would remain undaunted in his quest to achieve a sane society where residents are free to move and conduct their businesses without fear.

The Command further enjoined members of the public to feel free to provide information on any unusual movement or conduct in their environment even as it urges better community policing strategies among residents.

Police Arrest Six Suspected Fraudsters In OyoThe Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspected fraudsters who duped a number of people the sum of 800 Million Naira.

With the establishment of the new Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Oyo State, south-west Nigeria, the latest conquest was the discovery of a one stop centre for all manners of crime.

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, told reporters on Saturday that his specially trained squads would continue to ravage the underworld to rid Oyo State of criminals.

He also vowed that the onslaught against criminals and men of the underworld in Oyo State would not relent in anyway.

The police made the arrest at a trado-medical clinic at Bopa area of Oleyo in Oluyole Local Government Area.

At the said clinic, unsuspecting patients were lured into the frightening world of the syndicate of six con artistes led by a former Fuji Artist popularly known as Fuji Santana in his musical days.

Fuji Santana, whose real name is Akeem Olayode, lures terminally ill people from various sources to their dreadful shrine in the dense forest.

He promises them healing and longevity in exchange for huge sums of money ranging from 15 – 50 million Naira.

The suspected fraudster was not ashamed of his achievement from his career of over six years which include three state of the art cars and two poultry farms worth about 15 million and 100 million Naira respectively.

The people of the nearby villages expressed joy at the breakthrough, revealing that they had been living in perpetual fear and that the village heads had been of no help.

The arrest was the 4th of its kind in two Local Government Areas of Oyo State since February, in rare breakthrough recorded as a result of the Oyo State Police Command’s commitment to ending the activities of criminals in the state.

New Anti-kidnapping Squad Rescues Three In Ibadan

The new Anti-kidnapping Squad inaugurated in Oyo State has rescued three kidnapped persons within the same week the victims were abducted.  

The Oyo State police boss, Mohammed Katsina, described the development as a new culture of service and responsibility in the Oyo State police command.

To complement the activities of the squad, a well equipped Trauma Centre  for victims’ rehab after rescue was also inaugurated.

Mr Katsina explained that the department became necessary to stem the rising kidnapping cases in the state and beyond with the use of expert intelligence operatives, marksmen, and counter terrorism agents within the command .

The kidnapped persons – a 12 year old, kidnapped in Lagos, a middle aged woman and her child who were Kidnapped at Odo Ona area in Ibadan – were rescued barely hours after the office was inaugurated.

They have received treatment and counseling from the police Medical and Trauma centre and re united with their families.

The Commissioner of Police pointed out that the sensitive and complex operational procedure of kidnapping required a well trained tactical team whose operation must be mostly intelligence based.

According to him, the development necessitated the well equipped office to gather, intercept, interpret and analyse intelligence reports.

The coordinator of the project and an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Usman Dimka, told Channels Television that the fund for the office was provided by only ten people while another community donated a brand new van to boost crime fighting within the state.

These actions are clear indications that the people of the state are coming round to trust and support the police again with their personal resources.


Oyo Police Arrest Fuel, Oil Thieves

policePolice have arrested suspected petroleum pipeline vandals, with over 33,000 litres of fuel in Ogun State, south-west Nigeria.

Parading the suspects, the Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Katsina, told reporters that the fuel scarcity had made petroleum products commodities of renewed interest to criminals.

Mr Katsina said that vandals were engaging in the illegal acts to sabotage the efforts of the government.

The Commissioner was speaking on Wednesday at a vandalism site along the border of Ogun State where the vandals had successfully scooped over 3,000 litres of petrol for sale at the black market.

The Command also got a clean break with the recovery of a 33,000 litres tanker containing engine oil which was snatched at gun point at the Ojo axis of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Katsina explained to Journalists that the latest arrests would encourage the Command to beam its searchlight on vandalism and high way robbery, especially of petroleum products which had been on the increase since the fuel scarcity started.

One of the suspects, Aiki ademola, told reporters that he got the link from a friend who had already supplied him twice in jerry cans, but this time the consignment was much larger as they came in with about 24 200 litres drums.

According to the tanker driver, the group of six men that highjacked the tanker wore military uniform and took the driver and two occupants of the truck away from Ibadan and dropped them in the middle of nowhere in Fiditi. They were dumped in the bush while they returned to Ibadan to sell the product.

The manager of the filling station claimed that he had no knowledge of the criminal means through which the product was sourced.

In the mean time, the Police said that the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (NNPC) would be alerted to carry out necessary repair on the vandalised pipeline and that the command would intensify efforts to prevent saboteurs from peddling their inglorious trade in the state.

Governor Ajimobi Pledges To Ensure Peace After Polls

ajomobiThe Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has vowed that peace will not be compromised by any group or persons in the state.

The governor made the promise while reacting to the alleged threat by former Governor Rashidi Ladoja of the Accord Party that there would be reprisal attacks, if members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) continued to harass his people.

Governor Ajimobi added that the victory won by the APC was more than convincing, as the people voted overwhelmingly for him.

Former Governor Ladoja had said he was gathering evidence to enable him come back to the Government House in the next three months through the tribunal.

Ajimobi further stressed that any candidate who feels that the will of the people should be contested, must do so within the ambit of the law. He said any breach of peace would not be tolerated from anyone in the state, no matter how highly placed.

In his address to Accord Party (AP) supporters, former Governor Ladoja had warned that if the governor does not warn his supporters from harassing his people, there would be reprisal attacks. He claimed that the elections results do not represent the will of the people.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Katsina, said no group or individual would be allowed to take the law into their hands, advising any aggrieved candidate to seek legal redress.

Other governorship candidates, who contested with Governor Ajimobi have expressed readiness to work with him, in order to move the state forward.

30,000 Special Forces Deployed To Oyo State For Governorship Polls

oyo stateA combination of special forces and highly trained officers of about 30,000 drawn from the Police, DSS, Civil Defence and other security agencies have been deployed to Oyo State.

The security forces were deployed to the state to ensure a crime free exercise during and after Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in the State.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, disclosed this to newsmen after a strategic closed door meeting with security chiefs and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ibadan the state capital.

Mr Katsina explained that the deployment of tactical units have been done to identify flash points and to forestall any breach of peace.

He further reassured the people that it is safe to come out in large numbers and vote.

The Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Rufus Akeju, also disclosed that all sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials have been delivered to his office for Saturday’s election.

The REC further stated that a total of 277 candidates would be contesting for various posts in the state.

Police Rescue 78 Year Old Man From Kidnapper’s Den

policeThe Oyo Police Command has uncovered a kidnapper’s den in Ajia village on the outskirts of Ibadan under Egbeda Local Government arresting 7 people in the process that led to the rescue of a 78 year old victim.

The den was under the control of a 32 year old female who had been living as a kidnapper for about four years, peddling her inhuman trade in several parts of the country including Lagos and Port Harcourt.

Oyo State Police Commissioner Mohammed Katsina disclosed that the arrests occurred after several hours of a gun battle between the kidnappers and the police at the scene of the crime.

The police launched Hell Wind to rescue the kidnapped victim through the coordinated attack from his ambush squad, after series of investigation.

The victim, P.A. Adebowale Omotosho told journalists that he was kidnapped at his home in Awe, Afijio Local Government Area of the state 3 days after his return from U.S.

The kidnappers demanded a ransom of 1million dollars from the family, got paid 10million naira and were in the process of milking the victim’s family for more when they were apprehended.

Accord Violence: Culprits Will Be Brought To Justice – Oyo CP

AccordThe Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Katsina, has stated unequivocally that the sponsors of the attack on Accord party members on Sunday March 1, in Ibadan would be brought to justice no matter how highly placed.

Mohammed made the declaration while reading a riot act to politicians during a meeting with representatives of major political parties at the State Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The Police said 8 people had been declared wanted while about 10 arrests had been made in connection to the brutal killing of at least 4 people.

The State Commissioner of Police told the parties’ representatives during the emergency meeting that investigations still continue and warned all parties to appeal to their members to shun violence or face the wrath of the law.

He vowed to bring the case to a logical conclusion not minding whose ox is gored.

The leader and the governorship flag bearer of Accord, Rashidi Ladoja, who had to cut short his trip to commiserate with his party members on their loss, had asked the Police to ensure that the murderers are caught and prosecuted.

He paid a visit to the man whose faith still hangs in the balance, as some bullet fragments would stay permanently in his head.

He also visited the relatives of the deceased at Elekuro, where he consoled them and promised to get justice by exposing the culprits.

Reacting to allegations that APC members were responsible for the attacks, the APC Chairman in Oyo State, Mr Akin Oke, denied any involvement of his party, claiming it was an internal wrangling within the Accord that led to the chaos.

He also called on the Police to expedite investigations and bring culprits to book.

Imo Police Arrests Suspected Murderer Of Customs Officer

The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 25 year old man, Mr Mishack Osuala who is alleged to be the prime suspect behind the murder of his uncle, a Customs officer, Mr Mishack Ugwuoha.

Mr Ugwuoha, an Assistant Comptroller in the Customs was killed few months ago in his country home at Umuchoke Amaigbo, Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State.

Parading the suspect at the Police Command Headquarters in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the Imo State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Katsina, told newsmen that his arrest followed an intelligence report gathered from strategic partners who have been keeping an eye on the suspect since the murder of the customs officer.

Making an open confession, the suspect claimed that it was not their intention to kill the Customs officer but was forced to when his late uncle tried to break away.

The police boss also paraded over 30 suspected criminals for various crimes, ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, gun running amongst other crimes. He said that the arrests were as a result of the success of “Operation PUFADA” launched in the early weeks of September to reduce the high level of crimes especially during the ember months.

He added that the Police are hotly on the heels of one Okechukwu Uzoma, a 30 year old native of Umuchoke Amaigbo, Nwagele LGA, the last but fleeing member of the armed robbery gang who is wanted for murder. He appealed to the members of the public with any useful information that can lead to his arrest to contact the Police.

In a similar arrest, the commissioner also paraded a group who were purportedly hired by a man to kidnap his sister in-law and her kids on their way to school. He said that it took the rapid response of the command’s ambush squad to rescue them and then arrest the suspects.

The commissioner of police went ahead to narrate how his ambush squad was able to detect and arrest a man who impersonates being a member of the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, with an automatic pistol recovered in his possession.

Part of the arrests made were some other group of fake palm wine operators who used fermented cassava to mix palm wine and sell to unsuspected members of the public.

Items recovered during these raids by the Police include 990,000 Naira, and another 2,700 US dollars. Others are 51 cars of various makes, 9 AK-47 rifles, 7 assault rifles, 14 Pump Action guns, and 150 car master keys.
