The call for Kanu’s release followed a series of protests, including that of members of the IPOB in Southeast Nigeria.
The pro-Biafra leader was arrested in Lagos on 14 October, 2015 and has been held in prison since then, despite various court orders that ruled for his release.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mr Victor Oye, has waded into the leadership crisis rocking the party in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The party had gone into disarray on March 14, after a delegation went to visit the National Chairman of the party and the next they heard was that he had announced Mr Okwudili Ezenwankwo the party’s leader in the local government above two Board of Trustee members in the local government.
The party members unanimously rejected the party leader imposed on them and publicly announced their rejection.
The National Chairman, Mr Oye, has now stepped into the matter in a meeting with party members, where he recognized Okwudili Ezenwankwo, as the leader of the party in Orumba North.
He said that his recognition of Mr Ezenwankwo as Chairman Orumba North was final.
Speaking with Channels TV at the meeting, he said “There is no problem in Orumba North as far as I am concerned. Whatever we are doing about Orumba North today is how to position the party in that place to win elections.
“We don’t have any personality clash. For what? APGA is very united and I am very serious about it.
“What the party does by recognising some people is a mark of honour.” He added that the party would only work with members who show commitment and loyalty to the party at all times.
Mr Ezenwankwo also spoke to Channels Television and maintained that he was not expecting maximum consent for his new position but he would ensure that unity prevails.
“When the party appoints a leader, it is not a must that everybody will agree but what you have to do is to bring all the people together, tell them why we should work together for the interest of our party,” he said.

Awka, the capital city of Anambra state came alive, with pomp and excitement, as the leadership and members of the ruling APGA celebrate.
The ceremony began at the state Secretariat of the party in Awka.
It was a display of excitement by the people, with the National Chairman of the party, Mr Victor Oye, announcing the supremacy of APGA as a political party that would overtake every other party considering its clean bill of sanity.
At the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, Governor Willie Obiano also addressed the victory train, who stormed the premises, with victory dance, assuring them that the issue of faction had finally been buried in APGA, with unity enthroned.
The party anthem was rendered with all sense of loyalty and dignity and then the handover of a copy of the Supreme Court judgment by the National Chairman to the Governor who thereafter lifted the hearts of the party faithful with words of encouragement, urging them to stand tall as a new dawn had broken in APGA.
The achievement of no faction in APGA by the January 15 Supreme Court’s judgment is a strong statement for the party to rise and grow stronger and with its weapon of unity conquer any opposing force of other political parties that are yet to experience unity in their fold especially in the next election in 2018.
