FMC Owerri Resident Doctors Threaten Indefinite Strike

Resident Doctors, FMC Owerri, StrikeResident doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, Imo State have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike in no distant time.

The medics say they would commence the industrial action if the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health fails to meet their demands which have continued to linger for a long period of time.

The President of Association of Resident Doctors at the hospital, Dr. Victor Dike, gave the warning on Friday on behalf of his colleagues in the Imo State capital, south-east Nigeria.

He claimed members of the association were being owed their December 2015 salaries and were yet to be paid their arrears accruing between five to 15 months.

The resident doctors lamented that they have been short-changed and marginalised in their remuneration, saying it only affected the chapter of the association in Nigeria.

He urged the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, dissolve the present interim management committee of the institution.

The medics appealed for the appointment of a permanent Managing Director for the centre, stressing that the present interim management committee have limited powers to carry out some constitutional functions.

Police Explain How Three-Day-Old Stolen Baby Was Rescued

Baby Thieves and child traffickersThe Imo state police command has rescued a 3-day old baby, born to the family of Mr and Mrs Oluebube Ekwedike of Umuezealaowerre Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

While reuniting the baby with his parents on Monday, the Imo State Police Commissioner, Taiwo Lakanu, said the baby was said to have been stolen by unknown child thieves barely 48-hours after the baby was given birth to at the Chukwunonso Maternity in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo state.

He said that after the issue was reported to the police, the men of the command swung into action and arrested two suspects who were at the verge of selling off the baby.

The mother of the baby, Uchechi Ekwedike, 21, who could not hide her joy seeing her baby again, said she was tricked by the culprits in order to steal her baby.

After reuniting the baby with his parents at the command headquarters in Owerri, the capital of Imo State in southeast Nigeria, Mr Lakanu said despite the numerous warnings for people to desist from child stealing and trafficking, some persons were still adamant in causing pain and sorrow on innocent members of the society.

He said: “My team, the entire Imo State Police Command, will not rest on its oars to ensure that criminal offenses are brought to its barest minimum in the state.

“It is so unfortunate that such barbaric behaviour still exists amongst our people. But the arrest of these ones should serve as a deterrent to other child thieves across the state and to make them realise that no matter how smart they are, the hands of the law will catch up with them”.

While speaking to reporters in an incoherent manner, the prime suspect, Mrs Ngozi Anyanwu, claimed that the act was not intentional as it was targeted at the owner of the maternity home who she claimed was owing her some amount of money prior to the incidence.

Herdsmen Attacks: Governor Tambuwal Lauds FG’s Grazing Policy

TambuwalThe Sokoto State Governor, Mr Aminu Tambuwal, has lauded the Federal Government’s Grazing Reserve Policy, saying it will ensure better security, improve the health condition of herds and also make more economic sense.

The Governor made the statement on Wednesday at the Government House in Owerri the capital of Imo State in south-east Nigeria when he paid a courtesy visit on the Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha.

He further called on all Nigerians, especially the northerners, to support the policy, as it would guarantee better security for herds and herdsmen as well as people living within the affected areas.

The policy is part of the Federal Government’s effort to  put an end to attacks on communities by herdsmen which had been on the increase.

Governor Tambuwal, who was on his way to Abia State for a function stopped by in Owerri to commiserate with the Governor over gruesome murder of Mrs Bridget Agbaheme in Kano State.

Governor Tambuwal condemned the act in its totality.

He said: “Islam is a religion of peace and not destruction and as such, people should not hide under the guise of Islam and religion to perpetrate evil against fellow Nigerians”.

Responding to Governor Tambuwal, Governor Okorocha said the unity of the country was more paramount at this time.

He also called on all leaders from the North and the south to unite for a better Nigeria.

Buhari Says Reverend Father Mbaka Is ‘A Man Of Courage’

Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka and Muhammadu BuhariPresident Muhammadu Buhari has described Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministries in Enugu, south-east Nigeria, as a man of courage for delivering what he called ‘honest exhortation’.

The President said that the cleric’s exhortations early this year to the nation was one of the bests he had heard from the pulpit.

Receiving Father Mbaka, who was on a courtesy call at State House, in Abuja, President Buhari expressed his appreciation of the Catholic priest’s exemplary courage.

“Thank you very much for what you have done and said.

“It brought you out to the whole country as a man of courage. It was honest and well delivered.

“It has gone into the records as one of the best concerns expressed from the pulpit, not because it favoured me and my party, the All Progressives Congress, but because it was good for the country,” the President told Father Mbaka.

“Change will Come”

He also reaffirmed his conviction that “change will come to the country, with a lot of hard work, despite the security and economic problems”.

He appealed for the continued understanding and patience of Nigerians.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was present at the meeting with Father Mbaka, described the priest as a man “who stood for truth and propriety, and declared corruption unacceptable”.

He added that the Buhari administration “is committed to truth and justice, and won’t encourage corruption in any way”.

Father Mbaka, who in the run up to the 2015 presidential election, told his teeming followers that former President Goodluck Jonathan would not be re-elected because of pervading corruption and insecurity in the land, said he was happy with the mission and methodology of the Buhari administration.

He also wished the President a happy 73rd birthday and prayed for the nation after the meeting with the President.

Obiano Tasks Anambra Traditional Rulers On Sustainable DevelopmentGovernor Willie Obiano has tasked the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council to ensure that the developmental strides of his administration are sustained in their various communities.

The commission was given during the opening ceremony of the fourth edition of the annual seminar of the Traditional Rulers’ Council held at Government House in Awka, the Anambra State capital, South-east Nigeria.

Governor Obiano praised the traditional rulers for their ability to maintain unity and steady support for his administration.

He urged them to remain focused and ensure that the developmental strides his administration has brought to bear are enjoyed and sustained in the 177 communities in the state especially in the area of security.

The Governor asked them to articulate and present to him, a resolution on how to approach the issue of the agitation of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) with a view to ensuring permanent peace and stability in the Igbo nation.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Council and Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, commended the Governor for his support to the traditional institution as well as his giant strides in the development of the state in the area of education, health and youth empowerment.

He said that the seminar would help refresh their minds on their roles in their communities and urged his colleagues to adapt to the changes of the 21st century to help move Anambra State and Nigeria forward.

The Obi of Onitsha also expressed concerns on the agitation of the IPOB and the questions that had raged on the minds of the traditional rulers in the state. He concluded that caution, instead of rash judgment would be applied.

The seminar is expected to help deepen the knowledge of the traditional leaders on their functions and roles in their communities as well as sharpen their minds on contemporary issues on nation building.

The two-day seminar with the theme: “Impact of the Four Pillars of Economic Development and their Enablers in the Development of the Communities of Anambra State, the Role of the Traditional Rulers”, also featured the launch of a book consisting of seminar papers presented in previous seminars and conferences of the Council in the past three years.

Petrol Scarcity: DPR Seals Erring Filling Stations In OwerriThe Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has sealed at least seven filling stations which have failed to comply with the enforcement laws of the agency in Owerri.

The sanction occurred during an unscheduled inspection by the DPR to some petrol stations in Owerri metropolis and its environs in Imo State, south-east Nigeria.

The DPR Assistant Director of Operations in Imo State, Chukwu Ernest, who led the team, said the agency would continue to do their duty by enforcing the directive of the Federal Government on petrol price so as to alleviate the sufferings of the people.

Motorists were excited, as DPR also forced independent petroleum marketers to sell the product at government approved price of 87 Naira per litre.

They urged the Federal Government to help place a routine check on the marketers who were creating so much hardship on the masses.

Police Arrest Suspected Criminals In Ebonyi, Recover Stolen Items

Ogun-Police- EbonyiThe Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested suspected hoodlums who were alleged to be behind the attack on a Police patrol team at Okpoto, in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, south-east Nigeria, the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police (CP), Peace Abdallah, said that the hoodlums attacked the policemen in the morning, inflicting bullet wounds and machete cuts on them.

She disclosed that the suspects snatched away three AK47 rifles, with 20 rounds of live ammunition in each rifle.

The CP revealed that through intelligence network, the Police swung into action and smashed an intended robbery attack by the same gang, arrested three men and recovered the stolen items.

Items recovered from the suspects include; four AK47 rifles, nine locally made pistols, 13 live ammunitions, four live cartridges, one locally made double barrel pistol and a blue motorcycle without registration number.

The Command promised to continue investigation and ensure the arrest of other fleeing suspects, as the arrested ones would be charged to court soon.

She used the opportunity to warn all residents of the state to stay away from criminal activities, as the command would not fail to arrest and deal with any group or persons found disrupting the peace of the state, especially during the Yuletide.

Some of the suspects who were interrogated, denied involvement in all the allegations levelled against him.

Pro-Biafra Supporters Protest In Rivers

BiafraIt was total lock down on Tuesday at the Eleme axis of Rivers State as pro-Biafra supporters staged a protest in solidarity with the Biafra Radio host, Nnamdi Kalu, who has been detained by the DSS.

The protesters who stormed the streets in their hundreds were, however, prevented by security agents from proceeding to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Although the protesters appeared resolute to continue their march, security operatives managed to maintain the barricade, causing many commuters to resort to trekking long distances as a result of the gridlock caused by the face-off.

Some of the protesters told Channels Television that they would not back down from pursuing the freedom of the one they call their leader.

They called on the federal government to heed their cry and that of other pro-Biafran supporters for self-determination.

Police Boss Warns Pro-Biafra Protesters Again

MASSOB-IPOB-Demonstrate-for-BiafraThe Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, says enough is enough for the youths from the eastern part of Nigeria parading themselves as promoters of Biafra.

The IGP, who spoke to Channels Television earlier on Sunday, cautioned the youths against obstructing the peace of the land.

His warning is coming against the backdrop of massive protests for the actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra in Asaba, the Delta State’s capital, Awka, the capital of Anambra State and again in Enugu on Sunday.

Although there were earlier reports on Sunday that 125 pro-Biafra protesters were arrested, the police spokesman in Delta State, Celestina Kalu, said nobody was in the custody of the Police Command in Delta State.

It is the second time in two days that the police are issuing a warning to the group.

On Friday  the Nigeria Police Force issued a warning to the youths calling for the recognition of the Indigenous People of Biafra, saying that their “planned one-million-man march is illegal”.

In a strongly-worded statement, Mr Arase said that the protesters, from the south-eastern region, would be provoking the law if they do not stop such protests or call.

Imo Health Workers Decry Poor Treatment From Government

health workersLabour Union and public servants in Imo State have accused the State government of alleged intimidation and harassment of workers, especially in the health sector.

This allegation is coming after workers of the Imo State Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, in Owerri, the state capital in Southeast Nigeria complained of being forcefully evicted from their offices by members of the State Security Agencies without any prior notice.

Workers in the state argued that the concession policy of the State government was not a bad idea, but should take proper procedures.

They also maintained that all outstanding salaries owing to eight months should be paid, insisting that workers involved should not be sacked.

The Imo State government debunked the allegations stressing that no worker was forcefully evicted, intimidated or harassed, knowing well that the Okorocha led administration is worker-friendly and concerned about the welfare of its people.

The Chairman, Committee on Health Policies to Imo State Government, Dr. Edward Ihejirika, maintained that the concession policy meant well for workers in the state.

He added that the policy was aimed at ensuring that non-productive parastatals in the state is more effective and efficient, so as to generate more revenue for the state.

Mr. Ihejirika further said that he had several meetings with the Chief Medical Director of the hospital about the renovation of the premises.

On the eight-month unpaid salary, he said the process was ongoing, stating that the verification of workers was also ongoing.

Auto Accident Kills 11 In AnambraEleven people have been confirmed dead following an accident involving a trailer in a community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, South-east Nigeria.

It was gathered that the trailer, fully loaded with timber, lost control and rammed into stationary vehicles and a crowd of traders at a market in Umuchu town.

The accident left nine males and two females dead, while 21 others were injured. Four of the injured were said to be in critical conditions.

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has visited the site and commiserated with the traditional ruler, Godson Ezechukwu and the people of the community.

He also visited the injured victims in the two hospitals where they were admitted and promised to bear the costs of their treatment.

Governor Obiano Revalidates APGA Membership In AguleriAnambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has revalidated his membership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, South-east Nigeria.

Governor Obiano made the revalidation during the inauguration of Wards and Local government party executive members and APGA’s mini rally at Ama Igwe Square in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.

He urged residents, who are yet to be part of the ruling party in the state to do so immediately by registering with the party, while old members should also go for revalidation as the exercise is ongoing.

The former banking guru noted that the revalidation exercise by all APGA members is a way of strengthening the party as well as repositioning it to be on firm footing ahead of the next election.

The National Chairman of APGA, Victor Oye, encouraged the governor to keep up the good work of developing Anambra State.

He also urged the party members to continue to be faithful to APGA so as to make the party wax stronger.

However, Governor Obiano proudly displayed his new card, which now bore the signature of the new leadership of the party and urged everybody in the party to do same.

He maintained that the party stood for hope for the common man and would keep increasing in strength and number until it surpasses every other political party in the country.

With the victory chant by the governor and the people, APGA members were reminded that it is their responsibility to champion the course of the party and carry its message of brotherliness to every nook and cranny of the state and beyond.
