Buhari To Honour Outstanding Athletes On January 21

Buhari  to honour athletes Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, is set to honour all athletes that won different medals for the nation in various international sporting tournaments in 2015.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, confirmed that the President would host the athletes at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, January 21.

Among those yet to be rewarded are the Golden Eaglets of 1985, who were promised houses for winning the maiden edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in China and the current FIFA U-17 world champions.

Others are the victorious national men’s Basketball team who won the 2015 FIBA Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia, Team Nigeria at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, and World Scrabble Champion, Wellington Jighere.

In November last year, President Buhari assured the 1985 batch of Golden Eaglets that his administration would fulfill the promises made 30 years ago.

The promises were made during a reception held at Dodan Barracks with the players, in celebration of their outstanding victory.

In a statement on November 10 by a spokesman for the President, Mr Garba Shehu, Buhari said it had been brought to his attention that a directive which he gave to the state governments at the time had not been complied with.

“It is a pity that those promises were never fulfilled,” he said.

Buhari Urges Golden Eaglets To Win

The President made the  charge during a Skype call with the players ahead of the final with Mali on Sunday, November 8.

President Buhari charged the Eaglets to “do it again” because it will encourage Nigerians particularly the youths.

The Nigerian Golden Eaglets won the U-17 World Cup four times in 1985, 1993, 2007 and 2013.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had wished the defending champions, Golden Eaglets of Nigeria, a fruitful outing and urged them to bring the cup back home for the 5th time.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu quoted the President Buhari as urging the  team to do their “utmost best to match the outstanding performance of their victorious predecessors who have won the competition four times including the inaugural edition in 1985 and the last tournament in 2013.”

Acting FIFA President Issa Hayatou Arrives In Zurich

HayatouThe President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou arrived at the Home of FIFA in Zurich on Thursday, after having assumed the office of FIFA President on an interim basis on October 8.

Fifa.com reports that he was welcomed by Acting Secretary General, Markus Kattner, and addressed the organisation’s staff before spending the rest of the day in the office.

“It’s certainly an unprecedented situation for FIFA,” said Hayatou. “But we remain focused on the necessary reform process, the Presidential election and on supporting the current investigations.

“To restore public trust is a crucial objective. It is essential that FIFA carries on its mission of developing the game and staging international tournaments.”

Acting Secretary General Markus Kattner discussed the main administrational matters with Hayatou and provided an overview of FIFA’s activities over the next few months.

“Operationally, FIFA is working well, as it should, and the best example is the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which is about to kick-off in Chile”, said Kattner.

“On top of that, the FIFA World Cup qualifiers are taking place and over one million spectators attended matches this week in Asia. Our football development activities across the globe continue apace and our preparations for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in Japan and the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2015 are also progressing well.”

Acting President Issa Hayatou will remain in Zurich until next week, when he will lead the Extraordinary Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 20 at the Home of FIFA.

NFF Task Flying Eagles To Win AYC Trophy

Sunday_Alampasu_Of_Flying_Eagles_TrainingThe Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have asked the Flying Eagles to win the 2015 U-20 African Youth Championship in Senegal.

NFF Deputy Secretary General, Emmanuel Ikpeme, reminded the team that the entire country is looking up to them to win the continent’s championship in Senegal.

“On behalf of the president of the NFF, I wish to congratulate the players who made the final squad to the AYC in Senegal,” he said in a very passionate address to the team.

“The President is particularly delighted that the bulk of the squad to Senegal are from the team who won the U17 World Cup two years ago.

“The target to the team therefore is for the team to win the AYC and confirm that winning the U17 World Cup was not a fluke.

He added: “Your first match will be against the hosts country Senegal and do not expect it to be an easy match but we believe you are up to the task going by what you showed in your recent test matches in Ghana.

“We should not take any match or opponent for granted and so you should resolve as a team to make Nigeria happy and proud in Senegal.”

Flying Eagles coach, Manu Garba, assured that the team are fired up for glory in Senegal.

“We as a team always want to win every game we play and that is the attitude we will take to the AYC,” Manu said.

“We will not underrate any team in Senegal, but we are confident we will do the nation proud.”

2014 Will Be A Good Year For Nigerian Football – Maigari

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Aminu Maigari, has revealed 2014 will be a good year for football in the country.

In an interview with Channels Sports, Maigari said that there was already an action plan that would ensure the national teams consolidate on the success story of 2013.

The NFF President was also optimistic the home-based Super Eagles will have a good outing when the African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicks off in South Africa.

He said that he was pleased with the preparation they had, and confident that the players and coaching crew would deliver good results.

On the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Maigari simply said Nigeria would play a brand of football that will shock the world. He added that the world will confirm the quality of football that exists in Nigeria at the World Cup.

Speaking on women’s football, the NFF President reaffirmed that they are giving full support to the women. He said that the federation would keep supporting the U-17 team, the Flamingoes as they prepare for the FIFA World Cup that kicks off on March 15 in Costa Rica.

The Federation is hoping to consolidate on the successes of 2013 where the country won the African Cup of Nations, the FIFA U-17 World Cup and qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Abuja Comes Alive For U-13 Boys

The national finals of the 2013 NFF U-13 Football Championship will start in Abuja on Friday, January 3, 2014.

Organised on zonal basis, the U-13 National Championship is one of the cardinal developmental programmes of the Aminu Maigari administration, and has yielded ample dividends with a number of players in the U-17 squad that won a record fourth FIFA U-17 World Cup for Nigeria in 2013 coming through the ranks.

Speaking in Abuja, NFF’s Director of Competitions, Mohammed Sanusi, said that all arrangements have been made for the 13 teams from different geo-political zones that have made the final championship to have a good experience in Abuja.

“We have finalised all arrangements to ensure that the organisation is hitch-free, and that all the teams have nothing to complain about.

“This is a very serious programme that has been fruitful and we are determined to take it to the next level,” Sanusi said.

The states that qualified for the final championship are Niger, Plateau, Katsina, Kaduna, Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Bauchi, Gombe and the Federal Capital Territory.

All the delegations have been directed to report at the FIFA Technical Centre, Package B of National Stadium, Abuja, where the matches will also take place.

The tournament will last for five days.

Okorocha Rewards Four Imo-Born Eaglets With Cash And Property

The Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, has showered the sum of N1 million each to four players of the Golden Eaglets’ team and the sum of N2 million to the assistant coach who are indigenes of Imo state.

While receiving four of the players Kelechi Iheanacho, Chidiebere Nwakali, Chidera Ezeh and Uzoha Odinaka alongside the team’s Assistant Coach, Emmanuel Amuneke at the Government House in Owerri the Imo state capital, the governor congratulated the players for making the state and the entire continent proud in the just concluded U-17 World Cup competition in Dubai.

He said it is a great honour for the state under his administration, that out of the 26 goals scored by Nigeria at the competition, 9 goals were scored by indigenes of the state.

The governor said apart from the cash gift to the players and their coach, the state government is also giving them a piece of land each in choice areas within the capital city and also take up the responsibility of their education up to tertiary level.

One of the players, Kelechi Iheanacho, won the most valuable player at the tournament, expressed joy over his success and shared his experience at the competition.

The players and coach, who arrived from Abuja through the Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri, alongside the deputy governor of the state, Eze Madumere were driven in a motorcade round the city before moving to the Government House to meet the governor.

I Didn’t Place 1 Million Euro Price Tag

Meanwhile, the father of Kelechi Iheanacho, Mr. James Iheanacho has debunked allegations that he has slammed a one million euro price tag on his son, describing the rumour as “untrue and all lies perpetrated from the camp of his enemies”.

Speaking to our Imo state correspondent from his home in Owerri, Iheanacho Snr. said he was “shocked and surprised” to read on the pages of the dailies that he has placed a huge sum on his son adding that there was never a time he “discussed such issue with any agent or person” as regards placing such amount on his son.

He said it is obvious that such evil lie is coming from the camp of his enemies who are not happy with the present success of his son and are out to tarnish the image of his family.


FIFA U-17 Champions, Golden Eaglets Arrive in Lagos

The Nigerian Golden Eaglets have returned to Nigeria on Saturday after an outstanding performance at the 15th edition of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

The Golden Eaglets defeated Mexico 3-0 at the final match of the championship to win the cup for the fourth time.

The champions arrived in Lagos in what has been descried as a ‘quiet entry.’

Reporters were denied access to the team on their arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The Golden Eaglets have received increased match bonus of 7,000 dollars after defeating the Mexican team on Friday.

Amosun Urges Golden Eaglets To Claim U-17 World Cup

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has urged the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria to go all out to lift the 2013 edition of the Under 17 World Cup at the Final match holding today in Abu Dhabi.

In a statement, Governor Amosun said he had followed with keen interest, the journey of the Golden Eaglets from the preliminaries and described their performance thus far as ‘superlative.’

In a press release sent to Channels Television by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mrs Funmi Wakama, Amosun expressed confidence that the Eaglets would bring home the cup, as nothing short of a victory would make the nation proud.

“The Golden Eaglets have performed exceedingly well so far. I have watched most of their matches, up till when they qualified for the final. Their performance in the 2013 edition of the FIFA under 17 World Cup has been great,” the governor said.

The governor also expressed optimism towards the final match and urged the team to repeat the preliminaries trouncing of Mexico and write their names in gold.

He wished the Golden Eaglets victory as they file out for their final match in the UAE.
