Residents of Michika, a community in Adamawa state, northeast Nigeria, have gathered together at a cultural day event, organised to celebrate what they have described as their victory over Boko Haram insurgents.
Michika Local Government Area is one of the seven local governments in Adamawa state, severely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
For over two years, the people lived outside their ancestral home, following the attacks which left public facilities such as schools, hospitals and other government structures destroyed.
Speaking to Channels Television, a member of the community stated that little or no persons at all were left in the IDP camps, as majority of them had returned home.
“If you go to the villages, all the locals are back, all we require is for the government to create an enabling environment for us, to give us peaceful conditions so that people can go about their normal activities.”
Also presented at the ceremony, was a book written by a native of Michika, about the people, origin and culture of the Kamwe people.
The Kamwe people had occupied Michika for years before the invasion by the Kanuris and more recently, the Boko Haram sect.
The book’s author, speaking to Channels Television stated that: “Michika was for some time, occupied by the Boko Haram insurgency and people have been saying there is nobody in Michika- but our people have come back and the only way to show to the world that our people have come back is to organise a cultural day.”
