A police man was shot dead while 17 gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members were killed in gun battles between the police and the Islamic sect in Kano on Tuesday night.
According to the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Idris, the gunmen were targeting the Dala Divisional Headquarters. One policeman was killed and another was wounded in the battle, he said.
“Several locations were hit in the attacks, including the Jakara Police Barracks, Goron Dutse Prison yard, 52 Squadron of the Mobile Police Force and a Junior Secondary School at Sabuwar Doka in Ungogo Local Government Area” said Mr Idris.
The Commissioner also claimed that about 30 militants had used explosives and guns to attack Kano’s Dala police division.
“The Policemen gallantly repelled the attack … During the gun duel in Dala Division, 10 of the extremists were killed,” he said, adding that motor vehicles and explosives belonging to the militants had been recovered.”
Fierce gun battle between security agents and suspected militants broke out in Goron Dutse and Dala area of Kano state, Tuesday evening as renewed violence also in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, where suspected members of Boko Haram clashed with the combined team of army and the police.
The combined team of police and JTF operatives recovered weapons after the attacks, including five assault rifles, 220 rounds of ammunition, several Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), five motor vehicles, three motor cycles, N100,000 cash inside one of the vehicles, as well as a cache of drugs and syringes.
The security operatives asked locals to be on the alert for injured persons seeking medical treatment at local chemists as they might be gunmen injured during the gun battle.
